The #1 Hormone Controlling Your Fat Loss

When it comes to losing fat, things are often more complicated than they seem. This is ESPECIALLY true when it comes to losing the last few pounds.

Anytime you hit a fat loss “plateau” and progress stops, you can be SURE that it’s not as simple as just training harder, or eating less. In fact, when it comes to dropping the last 5-15 pounds, “calories in vs. calories out” has almost nothing to do with it!

The truth is, those last few pounds—what we call “stubborn fat”—are there because of your hormones.

You’ve probably noticed that you have a tendency to store fat in certain areas. Maybe it’s your love handles, maybe it’s your thighs…the point is, you store fat in these places because of a high concentration something called “alpha1 fat receptors”.

These receptors make it incredibly difficult to burn fat…and they are HORMONALLY influenced.

Now, right now it doesn’t matter where you store the fat (we’ll talk about that tomorrow), because first I want to talk about HOW you store fat…and how to fix it.

Once again, it comes down to hormones.

And when it comes to fat loss, the most important hormone you need to get under control is  INSULIN. And if you don’t, burning off those last few pounds is a pipe dream.

Here’s why..

Insulin is what we call a “storage” hormone, or gatekeeper hormone. It’s responsible the uptake of nutrients into the cells. Which means it can store what you eat either in the muscle cells…or fat cells.

And well your body manages insulin is the KEY factor in where it gets stored!

This is called “insulin sensitivity.” The more insulin sensitive you are, the less likely you are to store what you eat as fat…

…unfortunately the vast majority of us have TERRIBLE insulin sensitivity. In fact, just the opposite. We’re closer to being “insulin resistant.

When you’re insulin resistant, your body needs to release more and more insulin just to absorb the food you’ve eaten. Over time, you become sort of “immune” to it.

Visually represented, that looks like this…

Going back to what I said earlier, the problem with being insulin resistant is that it makes it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to lose fat!

Basically, because your body isn’t good at managing insulin properly, you keep producing more and more insulin in response to ingesting food…

…which makes it A LOT more likely that what you eat will be stored as fat…

…and almost GUARANTEES that you won’t be able to lose the fat currently taking up room on your waistline.

In addition to all of this, insulin also plays a role in the effectiveness of other fat-burning hormones like growth hormone and testosterone.

All of which is to say, when it comes to your hormones KEY to fat loss is getting insulin under control. This must be priority one.

If you DON’T address insulin first, it’s nearly impossible to fix any imbalances with any of the other hormones.

Which begs the question: how do we achieve this?

How do we improve insulin sensitivity so we can actually the massive fat burning potential of this hormone?

The key to doing this—in fact, the only way to do it—is to make sure both training and nutrition are specifically geared towards this exact goal.

And when it comes to insulin management, there is a simple solution for each of these facets..

NUTRITION – for improving insulin through diet, you need to look no further than MACRO CYCLING. This is one of my all time favorite nutrition strategies.

Rather than something broad like “paleo” or “low carb” macro cycling is more scientific. Using specific formulas to determine intake, you then eat more calories and carbohydrates on days you train than days you don’t.

The principle is simple, but genius: you need more nutrition on days you exercise and burn more calories. By following these formulas, you give your body exactly what it needs, when it needs it.

Macro cycling helps you to reset insulin sensitivity very quickly, because it’s sort of the Goldilocks method of dieting—it’s never too much and never too little, ensuring you’re always getting the amount you need. This is IDEAL for hormonal balancing.

TRAINING – In terms of training, reseting your insulin management is best done via something called Omega Metabolic Resistance Training.

If you’ve been following fitness for any length of time, you probably know that metabolic resistance training, or MRT is fast paced weight training circuits. This type of training has been show to be very effective for improving insulin sensitivity and burning fat.

The #1 reason fat loss STOPS (and how to restart it)

You know, in all my years as a fitness professional, the hardest thing I’ve helped people accomplish is not losing fat…it’s to KEEP losing fat. Which is way more important, anyway.

Here’s what I mean: anyone who’s ever tried to lose body fat is pretty familiar with this scenario…

You go on a diet, eating less. You start losing weight. Things are good for a bit.

You lose 5 pounds. Ten pounds. Maybe 15. But then something happens. Things slow down. Then they STOP completely.

You look at the calendar and realize that it took you the same amount of time to lose the first 12 pounds as it did to lose the last 3!

At this rate, you’ll be dieting for another YEAR before you lose those last 5 pesky pounds hanging out around your midsection.

Thankfully, it does NOT have to be that way. EVER. In fact, not only is it possible to lose those last few pounds in just WEEKS…

…it’s actually possible to lose those stubborn pounds directly from your trouble areas, like love handles, belly, or hips.

Before I tell you how…haven’t you ever wondered WHY fat loss slows down so much? Why it’s “easy” to lose the first 20 pounds and impossible to lose the last 2?

The answer? Your HORMONES.

Here’s the deal—when you start losing body fat, you create a hormonal shift in your body. Specifically, a hormone called LEPTIN starts to decrease when you lose fat.

And THAT is why fat loss slows down. That’s why it’s easier to lose the first 20 pounds than the last 2 – because when you have 20 extra pounds, your leptin levels are through the roof! Your metabolism is primed for fat loss, and you’re ready to GO.

But then you lose weight…well, leptin levels plummet, and fat loss STOPS DEAD.

Oh! And to make matters worse…

Leptin levels are ALSO influenced by your caloric intake: the less you eat, the faster they drop!

And when are you eating less? When you’re trying to lose fat, of course!

Meaning your body is basically hardwired to hold onto fat. ESPECIALLY those last few pounds.

All of which is to say, when it comes down to it…suppressed leptin is the #1 reason fat loss stops…

This begs the question: how to we fix it? Simple…

Hormonal Optimization

The key to RE-STARTING your fat loss is all about optimizing your hormones. In the case of what we just discussed, you NEED to keep leptin levels from falling too much.

But you also want to address hormones like insulin, cortisol, and estrogen. Because these hormones are responsible for WHERE you store the fat.

Fat Loss Tricks that Actually Work

Right about this time of year-and likely for the past several weeks-you start seeing advertisements for “bikini diets” and “beach body workouts” all over the damn place.

Quick fixes, detoxes, cleanses, 21 day programs—they all promise astounding results by virtue of their “secrets” or “tricks.” Sadly, most of them are completely useless.

Further, some of them are even detrimental.

You probably know that, which is why you're skeptical of anything that someone tells you is an easy "trick" to help you burn more fat. And that's totally fair.

The truth is, while there aren’t any shortcuts. There isn't a way to to lose 50 pounds over night, or make everything magically easier.

Are you using the WRONG exercises for fat loss?

You know what I hate? Wasting time.

I don't mean sitting around doing nothing when you should be working, or watching your favorite show on Netflix at 3am when you should have been asleep hours ago. That's not wasting time--that's procrastination, and is a time-honored art. Very different things.

When I say wasting time, I mean not getting enough out of something for the amount of time you spend on it. Basically, I'm talking about Return on Investment. If something doesn't have a great ROI, doing it is sort of a waste of time.

This is especially true if you could have done something else in that same amount of time that would have yielded better returns. If the investment is the same, every time you choose the wrong options, you're wasting time, energy, and results.

This is true for everything in the gym, as well. The truth is, some things just have a better ROI when it comes to certain goals.

For example, not all exercises are created equally. Especially when it comes to fat loss.

Sure, some exercises are "good" in the general sense, but that doesn't mean they're "good for fat loss."

No one would argue, for instance, that the bench press is a good exercise. It's great for getting strong, building an impressive upper body, and bragging about how much you bench. But is it really a good exercise for fat loss? Well...no.

Which is to say, the bench isn't super metabolic...but there are pressing exercises which ARE metabolic, and can give you the same (or better) benefits.

OR...what if I told you that hallowed squat was not great for fat loss? Or, rather...that there were exercises that are way better?

It's true.

So I'm not saying these exercises are "bad" -- I'm just saying that when it comes to fat loss, some are just better than others.

The key here is to pick the exercises that are going to help you get as metabolic as possible while still checking off all the boxes that you need for a complete program.

Are you making ANY these 5 fat-burning mistakes?

It’s Tuesday afternoon, which means you’re no doubt already hustling through the week like a mofo. I feel you. Sometimes I feel like there’s never enough time in the day to get everything done—between work, family, meal prep, leisure time, errands, and numerous obligations, wouldn’t it be nice if we could just MAKE THE DAYS LONGER?!

Obviously we can’t. I've tried. I made a buncha calls, and there's nothing we can do.

So, we can’t add more time to our day...

...what we can do is be more efficient with the time we do have.

One of the ways I do that is by focusing on ONE major task for each day, rather than try to run down a massive to-do list. Another way I accomplish more effective use of my time-and this way is directly relevant to your fat loss goals-is by doing shorter workouts.

Because quality > quantity, right?

Right.

There was a time in my life when, if told I only had 20 minutes to workout, I’d probably just skip the whole thing altogether. My thought was, if I can’t get in a solid, 60+ minute training session, then what’s the point?

These days, I know better. I mean, it's pretty common knowledge that faster, shorter, more intense workouts are the way to go for fat loss, right?

BUT you might not realize that for most people, making those workouts even SHORTER could be the key to max progress.

Which is great news, right? This means that no matter how crunched for time you are, you can still make fat loss a prominent and reasonable focus. All you need to do is follow shorter, more intense workouts that are designed to help you increase your deficit without burning yourself out.

To give you an example, let's say that you have a standard fat loss workout...maybe it takes 40 minutes. Well, splitting it into TWO workouts of 20 minutes each is actually going to help you burn WAY more fat. Why? Happy Monday! I can't believe how quickly the weekend went. I feel like one minute I was getting ready to go out Friday night, and the next minute I'm watching the credits roll on Game of Thrones, signaling the end of the weekend.

I'm telling you, it is time for a vacation!

Which is actually what I'm writing about today--not vacation per se, but just travel in general.

Is there anything else as stressful as travel? I mean, it's supposed to be enjoyable, and it should be. After all, other than emergencies, you don't really travel unless you want to. So since it's something you GET to do (as opposed to HAVE to do), it's crazy that it stresses us out so much.

Travel really can be a pain--especially when it comes to fitness.

If you're anything like me, FIRST you stress out about trying to get in shape for wherever you're going. THEN you have to worry about trying to stay in shape while you're there!

Put bluntly, very few things mess with your fitness progress like a bout of travel. And it makes sense: you're on the road, away from your home, your gym, and your regular schedule. You miss workouts. You eat food you shouldn't. And because you don't prepare it, you can't even measure calories and macros.

And all of that is hard.

BUT, if we're honest, a big part of the reason we mess up when we travel...is US. We get lazy. We fall into VACATION MODE. God, trust me, I've been there.

So there are really two sets of factors at work: the external ones (schedule, food, gym access) and the internal. Dealing with them requires two very different strategies.
