Burn fat AFTER your workout by doing these 3 exercises (study)

Today I want to share with you one of the biggest secrets in fat burning that you MUST know.

What’s the secret?

It’s not how many calories you burn during the workout that matters.

It’s how many calories you burn after the workout that helps you burn the most fat.

Let’s put this into perspective.

Say you do one hour-long workout and burn a total of 450 calories during that session.

You think you’re doing pretty good, right? 450 calories is going to yield you a weight loss of almost a pound a week if you do this daily.

But this workout did little for your metabolic rate, so once you’re finished, your calorie burn returns back down to baseline.

Now let’s take a second person. This person does a 30 minute session that contains a different type of exercise – a more intense exercise that’s going to target an increase in your resting metabolic rate.

This person only burns 300 calories in that session since it’s only 30 minutes in length (but it is more intense, so they burn more per minute while doing it).

But that’s not where the real magic happens.

The real magic takes place when this workout causes you to burn 10 more calories per hour more than you normally would for 24 hours after the workout is completed.

Now, 10 calories per hour above baseline may not seem all that special, but let’s do the math.

Calorie burn during the workout = 300.
Calorie burn after the workout = 10 X 24 = 240

Total Calorie burn = 540

So now you have 540 calories versus 450 calories and you exercised half as long.

See the power in that?

This is how you need to structure your workouts.

And how do you do that?

This is the power of metabolic workouts.

They help you burn fat even after the workout.

The AWESOME thing about metabolic training is the fact that by performing them, you are increasing your resting metabolic rate that we just mentioned above because of the nature of the workout design.

One study recently published in the Metabolism journal noted this very thing.

When subjects performed one of two exercise training protocols, either an endurance training protocol or a high intensity interval training protocol, despite the fact that the endurance training protocol utilized over twice as much energy to perform the session (120.4MJ versus 57.9MJ), when corrected for the energy cost of training, the sum of the skinfold reduction after the training period indicated that the high intensity program was nine fold greater than the endurance training group.

What does this mean?

Working out using interval training was WAY more effective than long-cardio workouts

In the study above subjects lost 9X more total body fat by doing interval training versus endurance training.

So the results are clear. If you want fat loss, interval training should be the name of your game and there’s no better way to do interval training than through using bodyweight exercises.

Boost your body's metabolism

You hear a lot about speeding up your body's metabolism in order to make your body burn calories faster, but how does that really work?

When you work out, your body's natural functions speed up. You breathe harder, your heart pumps blood faster, your body temperature increases so you sweat more. All of these things require more energy. So your body gets that additional energy by burning the calories it has received from the foods you have consumed.

You might assume that the moment you stop working out, you stop burning these extra calories. But you would be wrong. Actually, when you raise your body's metabolism through physical activity, it maintains that elevated rate long after your workout has finished. How much longer? Depending on the intensity and duration of your workout, your metabolism could be running "hot" for between 7 and 12 hours after you are finished.

Working out is one way to speed up your body's metabolism. Another way is by increasing your body temperature. When you are fighting an infection, your body's natural thermostat increases so your immune system can fight whatever virus, bacteria, fungus, parasite or other thing is causing you to become ill. This is what a fever is. When you are feverish, your metabolism is speeded up so you are burning more calories. That's why people who have been sick often report losing a lot of weight once they get better.

You can simulate this same increase in body temperature, although not as severe, by consuming caffeine, ephedrine and other drugs. These will stoke up the body's natural thermostat so that your metabolism runs hotter. This isn't always the safest way to lose weight, however.

But besides exercise and drugs, there's another way you can boost your body's own natural metabolism. It's through the foods you eat. When you eat a certain combination of foods – mostly proteins, little to no carbs, and a small amount of a certain kind of fats – your body will go to work increasing its own metabolism so that you burn more calories than you would if you were to eat normally.

The reality, however, is that your body's metabolism normally burns a lot more calories than you would burn during exercise. And it is burning them all the time, even while you sleep. In fact, you burn most of your calories during the Rapid Eye Movement sleep, or the dream state sleep, because that's when your metabolism is repairing and replacing all the cells you destroyed and damaged when you were awake.

Just a few decades ago, our ancestors have survived and even thrived on a diet of raw foods, mainly fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds and grains, dried fruit and juices, rolled or flaked grains, with a few herbs and spices.

During plentiful times, meat from animals and fish was included in their diet, but for the most part, it was just fruits and vegetables. Because of this, the women were lean and healthy, the men were muscular, and everyone engaged in daily activities such as walking and running.

Everything rocked along rather well until somewhere, someone discovered fire, and thus we began the long downward spiral that ultimately led us to today’s ‘processed foods’.

In just three generations, our society has taken a relatively healthy diet and while attempting to make it more appealing we’ve gotten off course, way off course.

Nowadays, highly processed foods are more attractive and looks more appetizing, making it more marketable. Aside from making it look so appetizing, we’ve added numerous chemicals to increase its shelf life, pushing preservation to the very edge.

The bad news is that because of all the chemicals added, these processed foods have been stripped of any real nutritional value and fiber.

The two most commonly consumed ‘vegetables’ now are French fries and ketchup, at a time when we find ourselves beleaguered with arthritis, attention deficit disorder, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes and cancer.

Add high levels of stress, sedentary jobs, poor air and water quality and it’s no wonder we’re a more obese, malnourished, infertile yet angry and violent society today.

Can it be possible that raw food is the solution to our every increasing social problems?

Well, let’s take a moment to consider a few things; two to three fruits and three to five vegetables are the recommended daily servings.

People often translate the goal as five servings of fruit AND vegetables. The correct translation should be a maximum of EIGHT servings of fruit and vegetables.

That means a daily intake of eight servings of nutritionally dense foods that are meant to satisfy you so you will find yourself eating less.

Naturally, weight loss will happen when you change your focus from processed foods to fresh fruits and vegetables.

When focusing on raw foods, calorie and carbohydrate intake are significantly reduced, thus avoiding overeating. An added benefit to the high water and fiber content of raw foods is the immediate feeling of fullness, a healthier digestive system, and a detoxified body with increased anti-aging properties.

Shifting to raw foods should not be drastic, as this can overwhelm the body. It is advised that you gradually increase your raw food intake over several days while reducing your processed food intake at the same time.

You will find yourself spending less time in the kitchen preparing foods and more time enjoying them.

It’s quite possible that you might find yourself strolling through the produce department a bit more frequently however, as raw foods do not have the vast quantities of preservatives (yes, that’s the chemicals) so freshness must be controlled by buying only the items that you expect to consume in a short period of time.

Let’s be honest here. You don’t seriously expect to lose weight in 3 weeks that took you 3 years to put on, now, do you?

Well, for some they probably can but it will only be temporary. Losing weight in a slow, steady manner is the healthiest way you can do it, and it’s also the only way to keep it off for good.

It needs more than just a diet plan, because those alone don’t work. It requires a shift in lifestyle. People often think that losing weight is hard because they want something that is quick, fast, and easy.

You must remove those habits that made you overweight. And you must have more body movement. The word ‘exercise’ makes us cringe, most of the time. But it doesn’t have to be a task that you dislike and it doesn’t have to be something that occupies most of your time. You just need to move your body more. The more you do that, the easier it becomes and in time, you may actually come to look forward to it and truly miss it on those occasions when you can’t do it.

Healthy weight loss takes time and typically you’ll see only a pound or two per week. Can you accelerate this with exercise? You bet. The combination of a healthy, sensible diet, balanced with all the food groups and exercise 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes will show you hard proof that you don’t need the latest fad diet making the rounds to get to your ideal weight.

You don’t even have to do drastic changes all at once. Start by making small changes that will make a huge difference if done cumulatively. For example, if you drink soda, switch to water. If you normally skip breakfast, try to eat breakfast at least 3 times a week. Eating breakfast really helps. Once you start doing that, you’ll feel so much better that soon you will be eating breakfast everyday by choice.

Phase out some of the fast food you eat, and some of the overly processed food that offers little if any nutrients for your body to use. Choose whole grain bread instead of white bread. Little changes. One at a time. As you discover what healthy actually feels like, you’ll naturally be drawn to want more of it.

Losing weight the healthy way doesn’t mean cutting foods out completely, even ‘bad-for-you’ foods. Are Your Children at Risk for Obesity?

There are a lot of articles written about weight loss and numerous weight loss programs around, but only a few of those address the fact that our children are also overweight.

This is very sad considering that the number of obese children and teenagers has tripled in the last twenty years and those numbers are increasing.

From 4% in 1974, the percentage of overweight children from 6-11 years has risen to 17.5% in 2004. The same is true for teenagers. Overweight teens aging from 12 to 19 have increased from 6% in 1974 to 17% in 2004.

Today, 32% of children are overweight. 16% are obese. And 11% are considered extremely obese.

Children are under even more peer pressure about their weight than most adults can imagine. Adolescent girls, as young as 13 years old, are begging for, and some are actually having, gastric surgeries to reduce their weight quickly. Some see bulimia or anorexia as their only solution.

The biggest threat with childhood and teenage obesity is these children are much more likely to become obese adults. The difference is they’re being affected at a much younger age with the same health issues that plague obese adults.

It has been foreseen that the children of this generation will be the first in history to have a shorter life span than their parents.

It is futile to talk about the reasons why we’ve let our children get fat. We all know the reasons, and we should take responsibility for it as adults, not the children.

We continuously feed them junk food instead of healthy, nutritious meals. Instead of oatmeal for breakfast, we feed them sugar induced cereal.

They eat too many overly processed, nutritionally lacking, calorie-laden snacks instead of fruits and vegetables. There are also too many fast food, too much and too often.

To add to that, we’ve stopped encouraging our children to go outdoors and be active. It’s too easy to let them spend one mind-numbing hour after another in front of a TV screen or a computer monitor.

They’re growing up so sedentary that even playing outside seems like work. What have we done to our children?

If you have a child suffering from obesity, it is time to be accountable for it and step up to the plate. The effect is only on their physical body, but on their emotional state as well.

Children shouldn’t have to suffer with issues like depression and a lack of self-esteem. They shouldn’t have to endure the daily teasing and rude comments from thoughtless classmates that chip away at their self-image.

It is not fair to let your children’s body struggle with the added demands of carrying around excess weight when they are just starting to develop. I am asking all parents and grandparents who have overweight children to do something about it.
