We’ve covered that the Skinny Fat try to eat every 2-3 hours, and do a bunch of cardio and situps.  Since that doesn’t work, then what does?

Obviously, it’s pretty frustrating when you are exercising daily and eating every three hours, yet your body isn’t changing.  You think there’s something wrong with your workout problem, so you read everyone’s blog, you read all the fitness sites, and you try to follow the advice of everyone.  Yet, this still doesn’t seem to work.  What gives?

I know why you workout.   You want to feel confident.  You want respect.  You want people to stare at you because you look good.  You want to feel good.  Heck, you probably want to get laid a bit more often.  You want compliments.  You want to look good on a hot night out with your friends and get noticed.  You want to be treated better. 

I know.  I was you.

How about we start doing things the right way, shall we?

Now…what the heck is the “right way”?

Great freakin’ question.  Good thing I have the answer:

The Fast Fat Revolution

If we look back at the habits of the skinny fat, we can come to an answer.

Eating Frequently

Think about it.  If it’s not working to eat every 2-3 hours (eating frequently), what should we do?  Change it!  My answer: start skipping breakfast and eat infrequently.  Makes sense, right?  The only problem is, a lot of people are afraid that they are going to lose their muscle.  I used to think that too, but guess what: when you skip breakfast, your body realizes that it isn’t taking in any food, so it releases growth hormone in your system.  In turn, the growth hormone will break down your body fat and use it for energy.  Sometimes, it will even use this fat to build muscle (which I will discuss shortly).

Cardio and Sit-ups

What about the cardio and sit-ups?  We know that doesn’t work.  So what the heck do we do?  Simple.  We lift heavy weights instead of cardio.  You see, cardio produces too much cortisol in the system (you remember cortisol: it burns muscle and stores it as belly fat).  Logically, we should do the opposite.  If we lift weights, our body will produce even more growth hormone.  That means more fat burned.  Combine this with skipping breakfast (AKA intermittent fasting), and your body will produce more growth hormone; this will break down fat and store it as muscle.  You will literally burn fat and build muscle at the same time.  Very powerful stuff.

Skinny Fat No More

Obviously it’s not genetics that cause people to become skinny fat.  The real reason is not doing things that will produce more growth hormone (skipping breakfast and lifting weights).  Now, I know I seem pretty vague when I give my recommendations.  Luckily, I’ve actually designed a step by step program that literally takes you by the hand and tells you exactly what to do and when to do it to shed fat and build a defined, muscular physique; a body that is confident, attractive, and sexy.

The Secrets of the Skinny Fat (Part I)

No.  This isn’t meant to be an oxymoron.  No, I’m not a moron.  Skinny Fat is a real thing.  It’s like a syndrome.

It’s happening every day.  90% of people I see on the street have “skinny fat syndrome”.

You know what I’m talking about:  guys walking around with scrawny arms, a little too much belly fat, and the occasional puffy nipples or man boobs (we can call them moobs).

The fact is: this look is so common these days that it makes people who actually are fit look even fitter.

The Problem with Being Skinny Fat

It’s not a good look.  The way that their T-shirts are loose around the arms and tight around the belly fat is not appealing to girls.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I have a feeling that you already knew this.  It’s logic.

This can lead to feeling insecure.

I should know, I used to be skinny fat.

The thing is, I just blamed it on bad genetics.  Now I know what a huge lie that is.  Everyone who is out of shape blames it on genetics.  I’m going to let you in on a little secret.  That. Is. BS.

Even though I started to accept having “bad genes”, it still scared the crap out of me.  I thought that I was going to have scrawny arms, no six pack, and puffy nipples for the rest of my life.

Maybe I could live with that, but maybe I couldn’t live with everything that came with being skinny fat.

You know:  stuff like taking your shirt off in public (it’s embarrassing), going to the beach, I didn’t like getting my picture taken, it sucked looking in the mirror and not liking what I saw – and worst of all – it was tough getting a girlfriend.  To tell you the truth, it was tough even getting a girl to look at me.  *sniff sniff* so sad…

The Habits of the Skinny Fat

When trying to un-skinny fat yourself (AKA finally look awesome), a lot of people have the same things in common.

First of all, skinny fat people will work out a lot – but do a bunch of the wrong things.  What are the wrong things?: cardio and sit-ups.  Seriously, they will go to the gym and run for like 20-30 minutes, and then go do a bunch of sit-ups and other abs exercises, call it a day and go shower.

I want to tell you right now that this may (and I use that word lightly) help you lose weight, but not the fat.  You want my secret to getting a six pack?:  Focus on losing the fat over your abs instead of losing weight.  You see, when you do a bunch of cardio, you lose weight.  Sometimes the weight you lose is fat, other times it is muscle.  Since your six pack is a muscle, you are essentially losing your six pack too.  Not good.

What else do skinny fat people do wrong?  They eat every 2-3 hours.  Why?  Because that’s what they’re supposed to do, right?  Dead. Wrong.  I fell into this trap years ago.  Every 2-3 hours I would eat.  If I couldn’t eat right then and there, I would panic.  This panicking would lead to stressing myself out.  You know what happens when you become stressed out?  Your body produces a hormone called cortisol.  Basically, cortisol tells your body to breakdown muscle and store it as fat.

The other obvious problem with eating every 2-3 hours is that it makes you feel hungrier throughout the day.  You see, your body adapts to habit.  If you make a habit of eating frequently, then your body will actually start to feel hungry frequently.  When you are frequently hungry, doesn’t it make sense that you will eat more food?  Doesn’t it make sense that you will eat too much food?  Doesn’t it make sense that you won’t lose any fat?  Yes, yes, and yes.

You cut calories in order to lose weight, which typically you do by exercising and cutting dietary intake of your favorite foods.

This can seem very unfair, especially when you see everyone around you is losing weight - by eating whatever they want!

However, by including these three tips into your daily routine, you could put your calorie burning in overdrive and shred your unwanted fat for good.

However, be warned, most of these tips are things you may not have heard of before.

Here are three simple weight loss tips that you have NEVER heard of:

Simple Fat Loss Tip #1: Turn Down The Heat

As crazy as this may sound, cooling yourself off during exercise could boost your fat loss.

By sitting in a colder room or holding a bottle of cold water, you could stimulate the activity of brown fat that is located on your body.

Brown fat tissue, which is fat tissue on your body that has a high amount of mitochondria located in its makeup, has been shown to eat up fatty acids for fuel.

When you are cold, brown fat tissue is activated, which could lead to shivering.

This can lead to more calories consumed, due to brown fat utilizing more fatty acids as calories.

You may not see a huge increase in weight loss, but the more calories that you burn; the better it could be for your waistline.

Simple Fat Loss Tip #2: Where’s The Beef?

If you are one of the many who has a plain salad for lunch, you are on the right path.

Eating a plate full of greens may pack in a day’s worth of vitamins and minerals, which are optimal for health.

However, the only problem with just a plain salad is this: you are hungry by mid-afternoon!

This could lead to a late afternoon trip to the vending machine, where there is nothing but empty calories that can go straight to your hips.

The best thing to do: Add a small piece of chicken, steak, or fish to your salad.

A small portion of meat can provide 21 grams of appetite-suppressing protein while only supplying 100 to 140 calories.  This could be perfect for getting you through the afternoon hump.

This increase in calories may lead to weight gain - especially around your waist, hips, and thighs.

Look for smaller plates, and fill them up with fruits, vegetables, fiber-rich foods, proteins, and essential fatty acids (like olive oil or flaxseed oil).

This gives the impression that you are eating a large meal, when in fact the portions could be perfect to prevent you from overeating.

Word of caution: just because the plate is smaller, does not give you the leeway to go back for more.

Fill your plate with the right choices from all the food groups, eat SLOWLY, and sip water in between to help boost your metabolism.

Can Caffeine Help You Burn Fat Faster?

“Caffeine is most powerful when consumed in an anhydrous state (capsule/tablet, powder ) as compared to coffee.”

I am starting with this quote because it is of utmost importance.  Caffeine can improve performance, increase cognitive function, and increase fatty acid oxidation in the body.  In fact, caffeine can also increase metabolism and fatty acid oxidation in obese, lean, and older adult subjects.

Why is this important?  Caffeine has gotten a bad reputation for a long time!

Caffeine comes in two forms: one is anhydrous form, and the other is from coffee beans or tea leaves.  We are most familiar with the latter.

So most caffeine we think of is full of water.  Anhydrous caffeine is not.  With 0.5 percent or less, this type of caffeine is found as a bitter, white powder.  

This powder form of caffeine is appealing to many different manufacturers, who use it in their products. 

Many supplement and soft drink companies use this type of caffeine in their products to increase the caffeine content.   You can find this type of caffeine in soda and many energy drinks on the market today.

The process of extracting caffeine from coffee beans is done in two different ways: soaking them in hot water, or subjecting them to carbon dioxide.  Soaking is the preferred choice because it is less expensive!

You can also get caffeine by drinking coffee and tea, but it is not as effective at increasing performance and weight loss as anhydrous caffeine is.

How does it help in weight loss?  Let me explain.

Caffeine has direct influence on the central nervous system, or the system which controls our fight or flight response.

This system increases the productions of epinephrine, which stimulates the process of lipolysis.

This happens when it binds to receptor cells called β-adrenergic cells.

Caffeine can also help increase energy expenditure, therefore burning fat and carbohydrates.  In fact, here is the research to prove it!

Research by Bracco et al. shows just how effective ingesting caffeine is for weight loss.

Their research shows a dramatic response in both lean individuals, and obese individuals.  They showed, by ingesting caffeine, there was a prolonged thermogenic response during the night.  They showed caffeine ingestion resulted in more oxidized fatty acids and carbohydrates.   They concluded there was a significant increase in lipid oxidation, as much as 29 percent in lean subjects and 10 percent in obese subjects.   This might have been due to the release of epinephrine, resulting in increased fat oxidation.  There’s more!

Research done by Koot et al. demonstrated similar findings as Bracco.   They did note one difference: metabolic rate increased almost immediately following consumption of caffeine.   They determined metabolic rate stayed elevated for three hours after ingestion, therefore increasing metabolic rates by 7 percent.  This means more calories burned, and more fat liberated and burned off!

Now let’s take a look at a study over a 12 hour period!

Researchers Dulloo et al. subjected individuals to 2-hour caffeine ingestion for 12 hours!  Their results will astound you!   Immediate caffeine ingestion resulted in an increase of metabolic rate by 3-4 percent over the course of 3 hours.   Over the course of 12 hours, they noticed increase energy expenditure of 8-11 percent in both groups.  So what does it mean?  Lean subjects burned 150 more calories, while obese subjects increase energy expenditure by 79 calories, just by adding caffeine to the mix!

Great!  Most of these studies focused on lean and obese subjects, but I also mentioned older adults.  Arciero et al. showed caffeine increased energy expenditure in older adults, not as significantly as the younger population, but it did increase.  They showed a 15.4 percent increase in energy expenditure in young adults, compared to 7.8 percent increase in older subjects.  In a following study, older adults and younger adults had a similar thermogenic response to caffeine ingestion.  The only difference:  smaller increase in fatty acids availability after consuming caffeine in older adults.

So what about increasing performance?  I am glad you asked!

Paluska et al. proved caffeine provides an ergogenic effect on performance.  They showed caffeine improves performance and endurance during prolonged exhaustive exercise events.   They also showed caffeine has some benefits on short-term, high-intensity exercise.  A review paper by Graham concurred the statements.  He showed that caffeine in moderate amounts acts as an ergogenic aid in activities lasting more than one minute.  He also mentioned caffeine can increase speed and endurance.
