This is not an option. Regardless of the fact that one can lose weight on diet alone (or in other ways), for health and well being we all need to move, preferably daily. The rewards of exercise are numerous and well documented. I don’t need to tell you that:

• You feel good – physically and mentally. This is my top reason for doing it and what I go on and on about if someone asks why I do it. It helps drive the momentum of life and is a good reason to wake up in the morning.

• A fundamental benefit of getting moving is that you breathe harder, taking in much more oxygen than normal breathing. Oxygen is a basic, crucial element that helps produce the energy that drives all processes in our body, and keeps us alive. Processes like the beating of your heart, the removal of waste and toxins. You can see how this leads to better health and helps to stave off disease.

• Exercise tones and strengthens your muscles, which support your skeleton. You become stronger physically (and can move furniture, yay). A strong back keeps you upright and helps maintain a good posture. Well defined muscles give you better physical shape, and you look and feel better in clothes. A well shaped body gives you confidence. Your body may become trimmer. Your physical capability shoots up and you can do so much more! You stay younger longer. Your energy amplifies!

• Your body works so much more efficiently – metabolically, mentally, in tons of ways. Your circulation improves. This is important for better delivery of that all-important oxygen.

• We’ve already mentioned that working out helps stave off disease. It is well documented that by being active you decrease your risk of developing certain diseases that are the scourge of our era. Like heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, obesity, depression…I could go on and on.

• Exercise can increase your self esteem. It can significantly lower your stress levels, relax you, and my personal favorite - it can stimulate your mind and you can get good ideas and solutions to problems while exercising. It does this for me.

• Needless to say, exercise burns calories, and helps tremendously to keep you on the healthy side of weight.

Anyway, you (may) know all this.

Ok, what we need to do is established.

What are the challenges to people working out every day, or as often as possible? Some people are blessed with a passion and inescapable need for exercise, and enjoyment of it. For others, it feels like a necessary chore that takes effort to get around to.

Whichever camp you fall in, as an avid ‘exerciser’ I can tell you that the primary thing with exercise is to enjoy it. Try and find action that tickles you, that you can do regularly. Something that can give you a reason to wake up every day. Even if you don’t do the (theoretically ) most calorie-busting workout in the world, as long as you can get sweaty and moving and raising your heart rate, you’re going somewhere.

The advantage of these activities is that they are so energetic that they are likely to burn more calories than you consume in a day. From experience, working out daily has enabled me to eat what I want without gaining weight. It’s peace of mind you can depend on.

Sports which are reputed to burn the most calories include cross-country skiing, swimming, bicycling, running and boxing (I always encourage you to go where the fun is, however).

But if you want to find out if a sport or activity is particularly effective at reducing weight, I find it most informative to hear from people who actually do the sports, and who tell you how the particular activity affects them, first hand.

I’m into hard workouts, particularly those that work the thighs. I have done tons of activity and workouts including skipping, rowing, running stairs, ballet dancing, and martial arts. As punishing as these exercises are, they generally tended to maintain my weight, not reduce it. This was of course when I was living decadently and eating whatever I want. I have however noticed from people around me though that exercising regularly keeps their weight at a much lower level than when they don’t exercise, diet aside.

Two activities that I have noted to dramatically shed my weight are running stairs outdoors in a dry, fresh air environment, and squash!

If you ask me about sports and working out I will gush about how good they make me feel, which is my drug, which keeps me going.

The most thrilling, enjoyable sport I have ever played is squash. It is addictive. It puts me in touch with my primal self and releases my self confidence. I feel like a child running around carefree with a glow on my face. It’s just the perfect way to start the day. Plus the amazing discovery that it can really slim you down.

As women, in the fight against stubborn fat and cellulite we are behind the 8 ball from the get-go. Women’s bodies were made with procreation in mind and one of the reasons fat is believed to be preferentially stored in these areas is for breastfeeding. We’re built under the assumption that at some point we’ll be responsible for another little human being thus we are genetically programmed to have a backup supply of fat so we can care for our offspring in times of famine. So, you see its nature at work.

When women lose fat, typically we lose it from our upper body first. No matter that we may have a lot more fat down below; our body will always take the fat from our upper body first. That’s the pattern of fat loss for most women, and as frustrating as that is, unfortunately we can’t change that. Yeah I know – bugger.

So, stubborn fat is doubly difficult – it is stored easily, yet is extremely hard to shift once it is stored. Let’s see why…

Adreno what?

Adrenoreceptors are found in all body fat cells; and these adrenoreceptors are able to trigger changes within the fat cell. They control fat cell metabolism as well as blood flow into and out of the fat cell.

Body fat contains two types of adrenoreceptors – beta and alpha. In basic terms, beta receptors promote fat metabolism and alpha receptors block fat metabolism.

Continuing in very basic terms, in the game of fat loss, beta receptors are good, and alpha receptors are bad.

According to research, lower body fat has been found to carry as much as 9 times more of the baddie receptors than the goodie receptors. This doesn’t paint a pretty picture.

So, if we move on to the process of actually losing body fat (normal or stubborn) firstly it requires us to mobilize the fat out of the actual cell and into the blood stream. Lack of blood flow to stubborn areas makes it even more difficult to mobilize the fat out of the cell. If you have this sort of fat, you probably notice that it often feels cold compared to other parts of your body. So, poor circulation is also a factor.

We mobilize fat with high intensity exercise. This also has the added fat burning effect of lowering insulin levels (the presence of insulin inhibits fat mobilization) so you’re getting a double whammy in favor of fat loss here.

Secondly, the fat has to be burned off once it’s escaped from that darned cell. If it’s not it can simply be shuttled right back into the fat cell again!

During high intensity training you are using mostly carbohydrate for energy as opposed to fat. Essentially what these workouts do is prime your body for fat loss by releasing fatty acids from the cells as well as raise your metabolism and fat burning ability for up to 38 hours following your workout (as a result of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption or EPOC for short).

Research indicates there is a big surge of fatty acid release into the blood stream, minutes after completing a high intensity exercise session.

In other words, when you have completed your high intensity session - your fat has just become ready for step 2 – fat burning!

And most programs NEGLECT this essential step! BIG MISTAKE.

I’m sure you’ve heard the ‘fat burning zone’ poo poo’d of late. However, in light of the above points, you shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss strategically placed, steady state cardio sessions in your attack on cellulite and stubborn fat.

If you neglect this second step, then you are missing out on the ability to truly obliterate troublesome stubborn fat.

And don’t forget – to get that beautiful firm, shapely, toned figure you still need to build or at least maintain your muscle mass so some heavier sculpting workouts are NECESSARY.

Racket sports – sexy, fun and slimming

I’m in love with movement and oxygen, and will always encourage anyone looking to trim down to keep moving.

Looking for a sport that is fun, hot, and that will make you want to play daily, or as often as possible? Try the forgotten – the racket sports. These are sexy by nature. Racket sports are fun and taxing. And classy. They are some of the most invigorating sports out there, and they tend to become a habit.

Racket sports, especially squash, have a great reputation for fitness, but beware: to play racket sports safely and prevent unnecessary injuries you need to be properly prepared by stretching first - and already pretty fit.

Racket games, like squash, tennis and badminton, are the types of sports that work all the energy systems and require a combination of skill, stamina, strength, power and reaction time.

These are sports one should get fit to play, rather than play to get fit. You do double duty and this helps tremendously with your fitness level. These games are quite high-intensity sports.

One thing that can make you feel good as a racket player is splurging on a giant racket bag like the experts have. They are expensive but oh so cool. And your brand defines you.

Most of us have tried one or two in the course of growing up. We’ll look at four – Tennis, badminton, Jai Alai (because it sounds exotic), and my fave, squash.


Tennis can get you up every morning. It can be quite habit forming. A cool edge you can get in tennis is practicing at the wall by yourself. In this it is similar to squash. I’m no expert in tennis though.

Tennis is classy and social. It can do a lot for you. You get an increase in aerobic fitness, agility, discipline, competitiveness, confidence, strength, tone, and coordination. These are good skills for especially kids to have. On the social side, tennis builds a sense of belonging, community, and commitment.

Tennis also really burns calories. Mentally, keeping up with your opponent spikes your problem solving skills. Playing matches also gives you mental strength & focus. Keeping fit off court will also help to give you endurance on court.

I haven’t played in a while. But the sport is good cardio exercise. It is good for your legs, thighs, back, abs, sides and arms. You also need some agility to be able to chase that ball around and get ready for your next swing. Tennis can become a nice habit that you can do at the end of your day, or during if you have a flexi schedule.

What I love most about the sport, I guess, is that it is outdoors. In this, it trumps squash, my favourite. Outdoor squash court anyone? The deluge of fresh air during a high intensity workout is intoxicating. Breathing in those extra kilos of oxygen helps tremendously in slimming you down and toning you nicely. Also the nice dresses and skorts, as they say!


Racket sports seem to have a lot in common, especially the muscles of the body that they tend to work. Also you need to get fitness off court in order to play effectively.

Badminton is one of those sports that many of us will try when we are young or whatever (like tennis), and maybe forget about. But it is a joyous sport to play, loads of fun. You get out of it cardio fitness, a cool new skill and a sport under your belt, and a great all-over body workout and elation for the session that you play. Go for it!

Jai Alai

Jai Alai is a sport that originated in Basque Spain, and is slightly similar to squash in that it is played against walls, in this instance 3 walls. The game is played by players throwing and catching a ball bounced from the walls. Jai Alai is characterized by the extremely high speeds of the balls used in the game.

The game is a popular gambling and spectator sport, and is popular in countries such as Mexico, Spain, Indonesia, Egypt and Florida State in the US.

I’ll always be biased about squash as I love it so much. If you want an obsessive sport that you can play daily and lose lots of weight, squash is it. This sport is a drug and gives you a high that is actually addictive – I am not kidding. Just visit your local squash club and listen to the players talking aglow about their sport.

Squash is a premium sport. It is also very classy. It makes me feel like a dancer, and energetic, youthful and confident.

All is quiet about the calorie-burning capacity and slimming effect of squash. I wonder why. Maybe squash players are quiet.

In taking on a sport, what is really important in my books is live experience by the athletes who do the sport, who tell all about what it’s like to do the sport, their enthusiasm for it, and what it does to them. The most primary thing is to get a sport that you can revel in, and that can keep you wanting to come to the court everyday. Squash is addictive like that.

Squash uses similar racket bags to that of tennis, which are important labelers for each player. The sport has so many perks that it is difficult to do them justice here.

It seems there are more low fat foods than ever.

Lose weight the fun way with action packed, calorie killing sports & activities

Thrilling sports. High power sports. Rewarding sports.

We all have to be active in life. There’s no shortcut to that. Even if you can lose weight without physical activity that’s not the point. I don’t need to tell you that exercise has a hugely positive impact on your life in many spheres – I’m sure you’ve heard it all before.

Besides the obvious physical benefits of being active, the real jewel is how good sport can make you feel physically and mentally. The highs that you get from it, the confidence it gives you, the glow it puts on your face.

As an avid exerciser I think it is law to find workouts that excite you and that you enjoy. And that you can keep up easily. What’s life without fun? Especially when moving can be so much fun. Think dancing, musical chairs:-)

So in the spirit of seeking fun and excitement, let’s look at some sports that can transport you to a whole new world. Others make you work your butt off but they are still very enjoyable. Especially when you get good at them.

I often wonder what it feels like to do certain physical activities (those I haven’t tried). It’s the feeling and the pleasure of doing those sports that counts, I think. How do you get your dose of adrenalin and endorphins?

Reach for the sky

High energy sports are cool because they are very engaging. They require a lot of your attention, your power. You work hard, but in a good way. You can take a refreshing little trip into exercise-land. Also, vigorous sports have the advantage of using up significant amounts of calories. This makes it easier for you to be able to eat what you want without fear of weight gain.

What’s it like to…
Some of these activities I will talk about from personal experience, and some…not.

Be a ballerina (in the making). This sport is a killer! It takes everything you’ve got, physically. Maybe I wasn’t fit enough but an hour of dancing was always too much. It was always challenging to get through, but it felt good – no marvelous, afterward. You get intensely fit, and have a fantastically well shaped and well toned body. The ultimate dancer’s body. Your arms get surprisingly very strong even without you doing any weights, and they get contoured nicely, but in a subtle way.

Be a Formula 1 driver. I wish! If it’s anything like racing Formula 1 go-karts it must be intense. The word is exhilarating.

But researching on the real driving experience, it seems like this is one EXTREME endurance sport, and a ride puts your body through enormous stresses. One driver describes it as being very painful, and says that it takes a tremendous amount out of you physically, and mentally.

Drivers have to contend with high G-forces pressuring on their bodies for the 90 minutes duration of the race, particularly when rounding corners. Their bodies effectively feel a few times heavier than usual, requiring a great deal of muscular strength to keep themselves up. F1 cars are exceptionally bumpy, missing the cushioning engineered into normal cars. Being powerfully shaken and stirred for 90 minutes can’t be fun. Apparently it is also extremely hot in the cockpit, and drivers have to ride in an uncomfortable posture for the duration of the race. As you can imagine, it takes massive concentration to be ready to react in a split second at that speed.

Drivers get used to all these extreme conditions, so hats off to them. They need to be incredibly fit. And devote a substantial amount of their time to the sport if they want to be good. It’s also not a cheap sport. Either way, it is electrifying to watch.

Dance Latin & ballroom. It is a heady experience. I love dance, and I’m sure it is enjoyable for many people. Depending on your pace, you can get out of breath. It is sexy and has attitude, and Latin American music is delicious. I did it casually once a week for about a year, and it’s been a while. However, it is a sport that can make you glow.

Skip. This activity is favored by boxers. It is murderously taxing, and burns a lot of calories in just 10 minutes! Assuming a goal of 1000, depending on your fitness, at 200 it starts to get heavy. Nonetheless, a very efficient workout!

Hike and mountaineer. This is definitely a rewarding one. Being out in nature is always nice. Depending on where you are, you often see breathtaking views. You’re just in touch with the land. If you take a few days’ trek, especially in a mountainous region, it can be a test of endurance and character to make it to the end of the rope.

A really fun part of hiking is the camping, out in nature, bathing in rivers etc. Camp food always seems good, maybe because you’re grateful for it, being so far from normal comforts.

An inimitable experience is getting to the peak of a remote mountain with a priceless view. The fact that you worked so hard to get there, that you can finally put your backpack down and feel the wind and sun on your face…

Be a Tae-Kwon-do artist. This martial art is one of the deadliest. More than anything, it puts heavy emphasis on fighting with your legs, more than the upper body. I was trained by an excellent, slave driving master who had been trained in the Army. Tae Kwon Do might be nice. Fellow players seem to think so. But our training was so intense and grueling it took the fun out of the sport. You worked so hard you could practically throw up. If you don’t train impossibly hard you might enjoy the sport.

It seems like I’m driving you off TKD but I love it in principle.

The many drills you do – the steps, the kicks, the sparring… are very demanding. You need to be fit for this! It is one of those sports where one session feels like way more than you can do and you are completely spent afterward. Again, if your training is not so hard-core you may not find yourself at this extreme.

A really rewarding thing if you are a girl is having confidence in the lethal power of your legs. Some of those kicks, executed with power and speed, can literally kill people. So you feel the need to be restrained and wise. It is cool not to have to fight because people know you can kick ass.

Be a rock climber. Eeey! This is not for the faint hearted. A lot might depend on how well you are trained, what kind of rocks you climb etc.

My team tended to climb cliff faces that were practically smooth walls. There was nothing to hold on to! It felt absolutely precarious being there, like you’re held on by pure luck. You also have to trust the belayer with your life – physically, literally, which I thought was too much. I did not get far enough to learn how to climb alone and belay myself, and I have full admiration for the people who can do that.

In principle I love to climb and if feels natural, provided the rocks are not impossibly smooth and there’s places you can grip. This is a nice sport.

Be a rower – on water. Wow. This is one intoxicating sport. You also have to be fit for this one. Waking up at ungodly hours of the morning, you feel like a soldier. Getting hands on and preparing the boat yourselves is quite cool. The sea, the beach – these are always nice, as well as other water bodies. Rowing early, before the sun rises, you can get to see the sun rise over the water which can silence you. It’s a holy moment, a stunning one.

Rowing works your body all over, and gives adult girls cellulite-free thighs, which is very, very rare – in any sport. If you go on a long, intense ride you may need to step outside your body and row like an automaton. It gets that heavy, beyond your capacity to handle it, such that you need to leave for a while. But that was one unique, tough experience.

Normal rowing sessions are VERY enjoyable, and you always want to come back for more. You don’t always get dead. The sport works your body so thoroughly that after a session I need to sleep, despite being very, very fit. Rowing is second only to squash in the thrilling department. More on squash below.

Be a horse rider. I’ve been on a horse casually a few times without really any training. It’s a bumpy ride especially when you haven’t got the hang of the rhythm for moving with your horse. But I instinctively know that riding is an amazing sport and workout, and can take you to new heights if you know how to ride.

Researching on real riders, certain themes keep repeating themselves. There is a lot of passion for the sport. Almost everyone talks about the sport being incredibly therapeutic. People describe it as being calming, soothing, elating, refreshing. It is a wonderful antidepressant. It is an escape from all troubles and you can lose yourself in it completely. If you want time for reflection, it is best to ride alone. One rider describes the time away on a horse as meditation, which is exactly how I feel about my workout time.

It also seems to be an enviable feeling galloping across a field with the wind blowing in your hair, or jumping. More common words about riding are freedom, happiness, addiction, religion. Now that’s what a sport should be like!

An extremely enjoyable aspect is bonding with this powerful, majestic animal. Getting a partnership and learning to move as one.

Physically, this sport works you hard, providing you’re riding and not just out for a stroll on horseback. Riding seems to work your arms and legs, butt, back and abs – and who knows what other muscles. It’s good for your posture and flexibility. You also get extra workout from the physical labor you need to do to take care of your horse.

One rider reports that she always loses extra weight when getting back into riding after having taken a break from it. Now these first hand accounts of what a sport actually does for you are what really tells the story, better than official, scientific data on which sport burns the most calories…

Be a basketball player. This sport is intense. Visiting basketball after donkey years not playing it, it also makes you pant profusely, and you get tired very quickly. This was at a time when I was at peak fitness from doing other activities. You’ve gotta respect the sport.

Researching on basketball players’ feelings about it, passion comes up. Enthusiasts seem to love it and live it. It can really up your confidence, and it’s a fantastic, social skill to have.

Be a skier. Wow, I have always wanted to try this. It is one of those that work your body from head to toe, so I read. Those are especially beneficial.

What’s cool about it? The thrill of the speed and the primal fun of playing outside with snow in the crisp air. You get an adrenalin rush. Cross country skiing especially seems to be a rigorous cardio workout, and kills lots of calories. Between cross country and downhill skiing, you get to work out your thighs, butt, calves, arms, abs and feet. You also improve flexibility and balance.

A friend once told me that his dad came back with huge leg muscles after a holiday of skiing. This sport seems to be very effective at toning you.

Be a swimmer. I swim occasionally, and casually. Even when you are generally fit, you need swimming fitness in particular to cope. Swimming after a long time, I breathe like a fish out of water, profusely, like I’ve never breathed before (yay, oxygen is the bomb). It can be a joy playing in the water.

I also remember swimming a lot when younger and losing weight because of it. Other swimmers seem to concur that swimming can tone and shrink you. This is noteworthy because most sports and physical activity serve to maintain my weight in general. Two activities that really shed weight in my experience are squash, and running stairs outdoors with plenty of fresh air. More on squash below.

Be a surfer. I’ve always envied this sport from afar. Sports where you play with the elements are usually awesome. Surfers seem to get addicted to the sport.

People describe it as…indescribable. It is magic sliding on water, you could feel like you’re flying. It’s a fleeting experience but a delicious one, you want to go back for more. It’s a rush! The time in the water is peaceful and calming, it’s a time away from it all.

Words that keep coming up describing this sport: fun, joy, amazing, thrilling, awesome.

Physically, surfers have great bodies! You work hard on those waves. You work your upper body and arms while paddling, and leg muscles for guiding your board when riding. It’s a formidable cardio workout and gives you endurance.

I wanna be a surfer.

Be a squash player. I’ve saved the best for last, as this is my favorite sport so far. This low-profile sport is addictive. It is truly exhilarating, and is seconded by rowing and dancing in my opinion. You just play around and have fun and the next thing you know you have a great body.

Squash puts me in touch with my primal self, I feel very natural, as if I am my true self. It brings out the kid in me. It is just play and joy.

The point of this discussion is to take a peek at where different sports take you. How they make you feel as a person. We’re seeking the highs in physical activity. Sport is therapy and pleasure.

Squash to my surprise, can drastically drop your weight. Most sports and activities, even vigorous ones, tend to merely maintain weight.

Do you really have to count calories?

Today I thought I'd kick things off by addressing the question people who want to lose weight always get around to asking sooner or later.

Do you really have to count calories?

Let's look at it this way...calories are like money.

If you spend money mindlessly, you eventually get into trouble and get into debt or run out of savings.

One thing that is hard for people to wrap their head around is that their fat cells are there to stay.

This isn’t horrible news because your fat cells have an incredible ability to not just expand, but shrink as well.

So you can get the lean body you desire without losing a single fat cell; you just need to make them smaller.

Here are three simple diet tips to help you keep your fat cells small and happy.

1. Reduce, Don’t Eliminate Your Carbs – Cutting out carbohydrates entirely from your diet isn’t the best idea for most people.

Yes, very low carbohydrate diets do work, but you can get just as good of results by reducing and rearranging your carbs just a little bit.

Here’s what to do. Grains (like breads, pasta, rice, oats, etc.) and starchy carbs (like potatoes) should be eaten first thing in the morning and directly after you exercise.

So if you don’t exercise before dinner, no potatoes for you (read in your best Soup Nazi voice).

The rest of the time, fill your plate with vegetables (especially green leafy and fibrous ones) and some fruit.

Pretty simple huh?

This simple reduction and rearrangement of the carbohydrates in your diet will have you eating carbs when your body is hormonally ready for them, making fat loss more efficient.

2. Eat More Raspberries – Researchers have found that a group of antioxidants in raspberries, called raspberry ketones, can impact your fat loss hormones at the gene level.

Raspberry ketones have been shown to increase gene expression of the hormone adiponectin.

This is a hormone released from your fat cells that causes you to burn more calories.

Raspberries also have lots of fiber (9 grams per cup!) - one more reason that they are a great weight loss food.

3.  Drink Green Tea – This last tip is going to help shrink your fat cells and help stop you from growing new ones.

Studies involving the antioxidants found in green tea show that they actually stop the maturation of your fat cells, preventing them from growing into mature immortal fat cells.
