Are You Tired of False Promises?

How To Stay on an Exercise Program Even if you're not Seeing Results Right Away

By "results" I assume you mean losing weight. But remember that you may be gaining muscle and losing fat. So, although the scale doesn't change much, your body composition does. And ultimately, that's what the game is all about...

If you haven't measured how much fat you have before you start your weight loss program, the scale can be really misleading. Sometimes, just seeing how your clothes fit on you may be a much more accurate method of watching your progress...

Are you getting stronger and do you have more endurance every workout? If yes, then you are on track and you are already getting "results".

Try to measure your weight AND fat percentage, say once a week. Do it in the morning on an empty stomach. You may see that you have lost just "a little" fat and you have gained just "a little" muscle. But Rome wasn't built in a day. The way you climb a mountain is one step at a time.

There's a lot to be said about consistency and there's strength in numbers. Small improvements add up over time with TREMENDOUS results. It's what the Japanese call "Kaizen"...

The Importance of Fiber

Hi, it's Matt Lisk from The Burrito Diet, and last time I wrote to you, I explained why procrastination is usually at the root of all diet failures. Let's face it; you can't lose weight if you keep putting the diet off!

How To Find The Motivation You Need To Lose Weight

Before you start a weight loss (fat loss) program, it's important to know WHY you want to do so. If you take care of the "why", the "how" will usually take care of itself...

Don't just say "I want to lose 40 pounds". That's just a number. WHY do you want to lose weight? Will you be able to wear those clothes that you feel comfortable in? Will you look more attractive to the opposite sex? Will you be a great role model for your kids? Will you have more energy?

Why do you want to go through a fat loss system and not just sit on the couch watching "Desperate Housewives"? You need to be clear on that. That will give you the fire you need to keep going. Write your goals down and stick them to a place you can see them every day. Your fridge, your PC, your wallet or whatever. Do it. People tend to forget easily.

Also, you can't improve what you can't measure. Know where you are and where you want to go. How much do you weigh now? How much of that is fat (buy a fat caliper from your local health food store)? How much is lean tissue? Use a fat caliper so you get these "metrics". How much fat do you want to lose? How much muscle do you want to gain? Be specific...

Saying "I want to lose as much fat as possible and gain as much muscle as possible" is a recipe for failure. "As much as possible" cannot be “reverse engineered” so you create a plan you can stick to. On the other hand, if you say: "I need to lose 16 pounds of fat and gain 4 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks", then you know that, on average, you need to be losing 2 pounds of fat and gaining half a pound of muscle per week...

The Biggest Fat Loss Myth

The biggest myth is that doing long, slow, boring cardio is the best way for a beginner to lose body fat.

The truth is that cardio is an inefficient way to lose fat or even boost your fitness levels. Interval training is better for both, but diet is the real key to fat loss at any level, especially a beginner.

So when beginners jump into a 5 day per week cardio program, it bugs me because I know they are just going to quit in a few weeks because of overuse injury, boredom, or disappointment in their results.

They are much better off starting with a total body strength program and even beginner-style intervals to build up their body while letting better diet changes take care of the weight loss.

Sample Turbulence Training Workout

Turbulence Training is a fat burning workout system built for men and women that don't have a lot of time, and who generally exercise in a home gym with minimal equipment.

The traditional TT workouts go like this...

Bodyweight Circuit

- This takes about 3-5 minutes and replaces the traditional "5 minutes on the treadmill" which I find inefficient and irrelevant.

Then we move to...

Strength Training Supersets

- This takes 20 minutes, and we'll pair "non-competing" exercises together in the supersets. Often this means upper and lower body exercises, or pushing and pulling exercises. Non-competing supersets allow us to get more work done than traditional supersets.

We most often use dumbbell and bodyweight exercises for our strength training segments, and can easily customize this for men or women, building muscle or burning fat.

Interval Training

- Finally, we finish with 10-20 minutes of interval training. We use traditional cardio machines, kettlebells, and bodyweight circuits at this time. Fast, fun, and effective.

It's fun, fast, and efficient. The workouts change on a regular basis (which is a revolutionary idea to a beginner), and the program cuts out all the boring stuff (i.e. dreadfully boring long, slow cardio).

People enjoy the challenge and the workouts go by fast, and there are a lot of exercises in the program that are fun and new to most beginners and intermediate level exercisers - and even to advanced fitness folks.

Plus, everything is planned out step-by-step so all you have to do is take your sheet to the gym (or down to the basement), follow the instructions, and get back on with your life.

Folks like that it takes less time (and with fewer workouts) than they are normally accustomed to, and that you can do most of the workouts with a small home gym set-up.

Do You Need Any Pills in Order To Lose Weight?

Here's my view on the subject:

Many people believe that taking a pill will solve all their weight loss problems. They buy the latest "miracle drug" or "miracle supplement" and they expect that to help them lose weight without lifting a finger. This approach doesn't work. How many times have you taken such a pill and you lost weight and kept it off without eating properly or exercising?

What's that? Never? So I thought. I rest my case...

If you want to lose weight, the first things you need to get down are your nutrition and exercise program. AFTER you are drinking a lot of water, eating six balanced meals a day and exercising should you even consider anything additional as a means to complete your approach.

I have used several fat loss supplements in the past. Some of them worked, some didn't. Different ones will work for different people so I can't recommend any specific brand at this point. In any case, don't expect to "lose 40 pounds of fat in 2 short weeks" - I don't care what the advertisements in the fitness magazines say.

Buying and using a fat-loss supplement may help in another way that most people don't think of: When you think you have purchased the best fat loss supplement in the world, then you also tend to make better nutrition decisions and stick to your exercise program. You say "Ok, I have paid money for this product: I may as well pay attention to my nutrition and exercise program so that I get the most bang for my buck". Using a fat loss product can give you that much more assurance that you are "firing on all cylinders".

But again: This is the last thing you need to worry about. People were losing weight and looking great ages before the first fat loss supplement was even commercially available...

Why Most Doctors Are Clueless About The Best Weight Loss Exercise

There are two main types of exercise: Aerobic and anaerobic.

Aerobic exercise has lower intensity and is performed for longer time periods. Examples: Using the stationary bike for 40 minutes, jogging for 30 mins - even doing the "chores" around the house.

Anaerobic exercise is higher in intensity and lower in duration. For example, sprinting for 150 yards, lifting a weight for 10 reps (and not being able to lift it more times) etc...

Which is the best type of exercise? You can use both if you want - but if I had to choose one type, I would go with Anaerobic. This means resistance training and weight lifting. Doctors have "prescribed" aerobic training over anaerobic for years - mainly because they have no clue about strength training. If you don't believe me, look at your doctor and see how out of shape he is.

People who say "I'm doing aerobics because I want to have a strong heart" have obviously never done any weight training. If you tell them to do a few sets of "squats" with the maximum weight they can handle for 10 repetitions (reps), they will almost have a heart attack. Hey, I thought that weight training doesn't work the heart (surprise, surprise).

Weight training is great and is actually EASIER to start with than aerobics. The exercises are usually "non-impact" and don't hurt your joints (something that doesn't happen when you jog on the road for example). Plus, each exercise can be preformed with 10 pounds or less all the way up to 2000 pounds and more. No matter what level you are at, you can do weight training.

Most people have a subconscious fear of lifting weights. This activity is connected in their minds with images of extreme distress and agony. It doesn’t have to be that way. Again, start by lifting only 2 pounds if need be. If you can’t even lift 2 pounds (a task most 5-year-olds do routinely) then you are in for a world of hurt in every day life. Also, there’s no reason to “push it“ until you are out of breath and shaking all over. Take it easy. Start slowly and work up from there. This isn’t a contest to see who can suffer more.

Weight training has two distinct advantages over aerobics:

1) It builds muscle witch makes you stronger and sexier. Building muscle requires a tremendous amount of energy from the body. Where do you think it will get the energy from? Right: From your fat deposits around your thighs and midsection.

2) It burns MORE fat than aerobics. Most of the fat burned when doing weight training is burned AFTER the training session has finished. Your metabolism will be higher for several hours after you finish training.

If you don't believe me that weight training rules, just look at the two ends of the spectrum: Marathon runners and sprinters. Marathon runners train aerobically running for many miles. Sprinters do an "all out" sprint for 100-400 meters - the sprint finishes in a few seconds. Both of these athletes have low bodyfat levels. But marathon runners look like they escaped from a concentration camp - while sprinters have well-developed muscles and look powerful.

Be practical. If you are going to exercise, at least do it in a manner that will make you more functional in your every day life. Most of us will need to pick up a heavy object, pick up a child, run to catch the bus etc. These are real-life circumstances that will require strength.

When was the last time you had to walk for 5 miles or do something "aerobicish" for 60 minutes? I don't know if the need to do that appeared in my life even once. Most "real life" tasks require strength - not endurance for hours...

How To Break Through a Weight Loss Plateau

A few days ago, a customer asked me this question:

"I eat healthfully, and exercise at least an hour every day, but I've been stuck at 146-150 for a while now. How can I get over this plateau and keep losing?"

The older I get, I like to tell myself that I'm becoming smarter - or I may be just becoming lazier. In any case, I definitely don't work out that much. You can get great results without training that much. I was able to tolerate 1-hour workouts every day when I was 20 - but not anymore. I don't know you but there is a possibility that you are overtraining. The fact that you train for one hour a day tells me that you have a lot of zeal. Here are the questions you need to ask yourself so you get over the plateau:

1) What type of exercise do you do each day? Is it only aerobic or do you do resistance training as well? If you are not doing resistance training, replace some of your exercise time (at least half) with resistance training. I'm convinced that "normal people" can achieve almost any weight management goal they have by training properly with weights for 40 minutes every other day. Get in there, do your exercises and then get out. You don't need to train more. You need to train smart. Get your weight training down. THEN you can add the aerobics if you want.

2) If you ARE doing resistance training, are you getting stronger every workout? Yes or no? Can you lift more weight or do more reps with the same weight? Yes or no? If no, then you may be overtrained or maybe you are not eating enough protein or sleeping and resting properly.

3) Did you measure your weight AND fat percentage before starting exercising? Where are you now? Did you lose weight? Was that fat? Or did you lose muscle? You can't improve what you can't measure. If you are losing muscle, you will just continue spinning your wheels.

4) Exercising can get boring. And the body adjusts to the "same ol', same ol'" after a while. Try changing up your workout routine so you don't get bored.

Remember to keep track of your progress. Measure your weight, fat and muscle once a week on an empty stomach in the morning. Know how you are progressing and "fail fast" if need be. If you see a week that you gained fat and lost muscle (it happens even in the best families) try to readjust your plan. Don't make the mistake that many people make and that's following a plan that doesn't work FOR YEARS. This is called "failing in slow motion". You want fast results? Measure your progress then.

If you keep an ultra strict diet for several days, then you can reward yourself by having a "free day" where you eat some of your favorites foods like pizza, cheesecake etc. Don't eat 10,000 calories, ok? But taking a break every now and then can really help you stay on track for the long term.

You have much more control over your life that others would have you believe. Right now, you are overweight because of some very specific habits you have. Focus on those habits. As soon as you correct them, you will be able to start losing weight and fat and looking great.

Forget who you have been all your life. Saying things like "I'm a fat boy" or "I look like a barrel" don't help you. Stay away from the victim mentality. Decide who you are going to be from this point on.

Before you go to bed each night, spend just 5 minutes to plan the next day. What are you going to do at 8:00 AM? What at 10:25 AM? Note down your program. What will you eat? When will you exercise? This will allow you to "fly" through the next day much easier. Don't just wait for the next day to come and then just "react" to whatever comes your way. Remember: Failing to plan is planning to fail.

Many people say "I can't do weight training (or exercise at all) because I'm in no physical condition to do so".

This is one of the best examples of the "problem" being the ultimate solution. START working out now. Take it slowly. Start gently. Soon you'll be in such unbelievable shape you'll wonder how you ever lived without eating right and exercising. Nothing feels like being in great shape does.

Starting a weight loss program can be challenging or even scary for some people. We all have fear in at least one sector of our lives. But you need to realize that the next step in your personal growth (and weight loss), is feeling "uncomfortable". Only when you step out of your comfort zone will you start to improve. Take it one step at a time and give it your best shot. Be bold...

Get Fit After Kids takes the Hard Work out of Losing Weight

One thing that most constantly surprises me about people who claim that they want to get fit or become healthier is that they usually seem to have so little idea about exactly what they need to do.

It’s like they are ‘wannabe’ car mechanics who have never opened an automobile hood in their lives, or a brain surgeon who skipped medical school entirely. They simply have no idea what they are talking about, apart from some vague, general idea about ‘being healthier’.

Do You Need 'Cardio' In Order To Lose Weight?

I was recently asked this question:

"How much cardio do I need each day to lose weight?"

My answer: You don't "need" any cardio (aerobic training) to lose the fat. Not to say that you shouldn't do it - but I'd rather see you do it only AFTER you have some resistance training in place. Remember: we want to build lean muscle and burn more calories even at rest. That's the best way to lose fat.

Now, if you want to add cardio as a means of increasing your activity level and the calories you expend, I suggest you start slow - maybe do 15-minute sessions on the stationary bike - and then increase as you go. Most people who start cardio like a bull at the gate (doing 60 minutes every day) burn out quickly and stop after a few days. Start slowly and build up from there. Find an activity you enjoy. Then stick with it.

I think cardio may help but it's greatly overrated. It's definitely not the "king" of fat loss as many have preached for ages. Proper nutrition and weight training are much more important to the process.

By the way, as I type this, I'm sure that many people are reading in disbelief and saying "This guy is nuts. No cardio? Where did he come from, Mars?" I can appreciate their concern. They have been bombarded with "cardio stuff" from every possible direction for years.

More and more people take "cardio classes" today. But why are people getting fatter and fatter? You tell me.

Doctors have "prescribed" aerobic training over anaerobic for years - mainly because they have no clue about strength training. If you don't believe me, look at your doctor and see how out of shape he is.

For all it's worth, I think I can "take" almost any doctor in a strength and endurance contest with the winner taking it all - and I hardly do any aerobics. I have more important things to do - like play videogames for example (Hey, I think it's sad that more people don't play videogames in today's society but this is another discussion altogether :-)

It doesn't matter if you agree with me or not. If you want me to "go with the flow" and "play it safe" and tell you what everybody else tells you, let me tell you that it ain't gonna happen. I'm giving you the facts (not theories or philosophies). If you want to follow them, that's fine. If not, that's fine too. I'm doing the best I can and hope my advice doesn't fall on "deaf ears".

Why You Do NOT Want to Lose 'Weight'

First of all, the human body is not just "weight". It has both fatty tissue and lean tissue (muscles, internal organs, bones etc). What you really want to do, is NOT to lose weight. It's to lose fat.

Otherwise, if you currently look like a "pear" and end up losing "weight", you will just end up looking like a smaller pear. But, if you lose fat and preserve or even increase your muscle tissue, you will look (and be) healthier, stronger and sexier...

When you want to learn how to do something, you need do nothing more than observe the people that have done what you want to do. Then, "emulate success" and copy their methods.

Who are the people who have taken what you want to do to the extreme? Answer: Bodybuilders. Don't let the word freak you out. It doesn't matter if you want to take your physique to that extreme or not. Competitive bodybuilders have their stuff down and you know it. They have very little fat (5% or less for example - while an overweight person may have 30% or more) - and they also have the maximum amount of muscle mass.

You don't need to be so meticulous in your approach - but "borrowing" some ideas from the methods they use will help you lose weight (fat) and keep it off for good.

I find it really surprising that many people who want to lose weight just take advice from friends who are also overweight. Or, they read about the "super weekend diet" in their newspaper or their favorite lifestyle magazine. Chances are that the writer of the article is several pounds overweight of course.

Very few people will read a "bodybuilding" book or at least a fitness magazine. This is very interesting, because even smart people fall in this trap. They can be very successful in their careers and very "witty" in conversations with their friends - but when they try to lose weight, common sense and smarts go out of the window...

6 Pack Abs confusion?

Let me tell you a story about a friend of mine that you might be able to relate to...

You see, up until about 3 years ago, my friend Scott worked out in the gym for a couple hours per day and he always ended each workout with an hour of cardio and 10 minutes of various types of crunches.

He'd be in the back of the gym where the mats are with a bunch of other people crunching away - feet on the ground, feet in the air, twisting his body - any and every type of crunch he could think of.

The Best Foods To Focus On In Order To Lose Weight

1) Water. I'm not sure if this can be classified as "food", but it's undoubtedly the most neglected part of most people's diets. Our bodies are about 75% water. Yet, in America almost NOBODY drinks enough water (pretty much the same goes for the rest of the world). Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before eating, will help you feel "fuller" - and you won't feel the urge to eat as much when the time comes. How do you know that you drink enough? Ideally, you should go to the toilet several times a day and what “comes out” should be crystal clear as water. Not a very subtle way to make sure that you are on track - but it’s extremely accurate.

2) Vegetables: They may not be the "sexiest" type of food, but let me tell you why focusing on them can help you lose weight. First of all, they contain very few calories. Vegetables are mainly "made" of water. For their volume (the space they take up), they have ridiculously low calories. For example, eating 3 carrots can help satisfy your hunger without adding all that many calories to your daily intake.

As if that weren't enough, vegetables have a very interesting effect on the human body as far as the "Thermic effect of food" goes. For example, they may contain 100 calories but they actually require 130 calories from your body in order to be digested and assimilated. So, in essence you just lost 30 calories just by eating them.

Mind you, a diet comprised exclusively from vegetables is unhealthy. You still need protein - and vegetables don't contain any. But consuming several pieces of vegetables a day will help you stay on track and lose weight faster. And speaking of protein...

3) Protein. This is the nutrient with the highest thermic value. It requires the most calories to digest and is the nutrient that is the most difficult for your body to turn into fat. Eat several meals containing protein throughout the day. Chicken, turkey, tuna and egg whites are all fair game...

5 Tips To Help You Stick To Your Diet

First of all, you need to shift your mindset. Forget about "dieting for a week or a month so I can look good for summer". Instead, you need to adopt a LIFESTYLE CHANGE and stick to good nutrition habits...

Dieting, at least the way it's perceived by most people, is horrible. You feel hungry, weak and deprived. How long will you be able to stay on a program that makes you feel like that? Not long.


1) Eat several small meals throughout the day rather than 3 big ones. Eat at predetermined intervals and don't wait for you to feel "starved" before you eat. Because, if you do, you will eat a lot more than necessary AND you will tend to make poor food choices (chocolate, donuts, double serving of pasta etc...). Eat a small feeding every few hours (3-4 for example) BEFORE the hunger pangs arrive. I honestly can't remember the last time I even felt the sense of hunger.

2) Don't eat foods that people say "are good for you", if you don't like them. I can tell you that egg whites are an excellent source of protein with high biological value until I'm blue in the face. But I know you won't eat them if you don't like the way they taste. The same goes for me. If I don't like something, I won't eat it. You need to find foods that are healthy and with taste that you like. That way, you will be able to eat foods you enjoy while losing weight (or maintaining a healthy weight).

3) Discover the real good taste in food. People seem to think that "junk food tastes good" and "healthy food sucks". I'm not quite sure where that comes from. You can eat healthily without sacrificing taste. You can use spices to make the food more palatable. Many people want to add tons of salt to their food before they eat it. Salt masks the real taste of food. If you start eating food without adding salt, initially the food may taste "boring" - but before long, you will be able to eat the foods and actually enjoy them (not pretend that you enjoy them, REALLY enjoy them).

4) Eating "off-limits" foods may not be so off-limits after all. Here's an example: Let's say that in order to lose weight, you need to consume 1800 calories a day. If 1500 of these calories have come from tuna, chicken breast, rice and vegetables, do you think it will be a disaster if the rest of the 300 calories come from cheesecake? Chances are that NO.

Why? Because overall, you will still be within acceptable fat limits for the day. So, if you want to have a "really bad" food EVERY DAY, you can do it, if the rest of your meals are flawless. The body doesn't respond well to long-term diets with zero fat. So, if 5 of your meals only contain lean protein and carbs, the 6th meal (not necessarily the last in the day) can be a food that contains fat and there will be no problem eating that food. And the chances that this food will turn to fat in the body are diminished if eaten in the morning (after an overnight fast) or after a workout.

5) If you blow your diet unwillingly, it's not the end of the world. Think about it: If you drive on the highway and suddenly you get a flat tire, would you get out of the car and start putting holes in the rest of the tires? I hope not. If you eat something that had more fat and calories than it should, don't stop your entire diet because "all is lost and doomsday is here". Instead, just try to be even more disciplined for the rest of the day (and disciplined does NOT mean not to eat)...

The Glycemic Index: Key to Fat Loss Or Just Another Diet Gimmick?

The glycemic index (GI) is a scale that measures how quickly carbohydrate foods are broken down into glucose. The original purpose for the glycemic index was to help diabetics keep their blood sugar under control. The glycemic index has recently attracted a lot of attention in the bodybuilding, fitness and weight loss world and has even become the central theme in numerous best-selling diet books as a method to choose the foods that are best for losing body fat.

According to advocates of the glycemic index system, foods that are high on the GI scale such as rice cakes, carrots, potatoes, or grape juice are "unfavorable" and should be avoided because they are absorbed quickly, raise blood sugar rapidly and are therefore more likely to convert to fat or cause health problems. Instead, we are urged to consume carbohydrates that are low on the GI scale as black eye peas, old fashioned oatmeal, peanuts, apples and beans because they do not raise blood sugar as rapidly.
While the GI does have some useful applications, such as the use of high GI foods or drinks for post workout nutrition and the strong emphasis on low GI foods for those with blood sugar regulation problems, there are flaws in strictly using the glycemic index as your only criteria to choose carbs on a fat loss program.

For example, the glycemic index is based on eating carbohydrates by themselves in a fasted state. If you are following effective principles of fat-burning and muscle building nutrition such as those outlined in my Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle (BFFM) e-book, you should be eating small, frequent meals to increase your energy, maintain lean body mass and optimize metabolism for fat loss. However, since the glycemic index of various foods was developed based on eating each food in the fasted state, the glycemic index loses some of its significance.

In addition, when you are on diet programs aimed at improving body composition, (losing fat / gaining muscle), you will usually be combining carbs and protein together with each meal for the purposes of improving your fat to muscle ratio. When carbs are eaten in mixed meals that contain protein and some fat, the glycemic index loses more of its significance because the protein and fat slows the absorption of the carbohydrates (so does fiber).

Mashed potatoes have a glycemic index near that of pure glucose, but combine the potatoes with a chicken breast and broccoli and the glycemic index of the entire meal is lower than the potatoes by itself.

Rice cakes have a very high glycemic index, but if you were to put a couple tablespoons of peanut butter on them, the fat would slow the absorption of the carbs, thereby lowering the glycemic index of the combination.

A far more important and relevant criteria for selecting carbs - and ALL your foods, proteins and fats included - is whether they are natural or processed. To say that a healthy person with no metabolic diseases or disorders should completely avoid natural, unprocessed foods like carrots or potatoes simply because they are high on the glycemic index is ridiculous.

I know many bodybuilders (including myself) who eat high glycemic index foods such as white potatoes every day right up until the day of a competition and they reach single digit body fat. How do they do it if high GI foods “make you fat?” It’s simple – high GI foods DON’T necessarily make you fat – choosing natural foods and burning more calories than you consume are far more important factors. Although it’s not correct to say that all calories are created equal, a calorie deficit is the most important factor of all when fat loss is your goal.

The glycemic index need not be completely disregarded, as it is a legitimate tool in certain situations, but diet programs that hang their hats on glycemic index alone are just another example of how one single aspect of nutrition can be used as a "hook" in marketing and said to be the "end all be all" of fat loss, when it's really only one small piece of the puzzle.

Eating Low glycemic index foods alone does NOT guarantee you will lose fat. You have to take in the bigger picture, which includes calories/energy balance, meal timing and frequency, macronutrient composition, food choices as well as how these nutritional factors interact with your exercise program.

Kids and Video Games: The Couch Potato Syndrome

When Atari first hit the market over twenty years ago, everyone, young and old alike, was into video games. It was something new that the family played for hours. Now, video games have become more sophisticated and are played by younger and younger groups of kids. But, even though these games are fun, watch out or your kid will morph into the unyielding vegetable known as the couch potato.

You usually gave the old man staring blindly at the television this moniker but it now applies to kids caught up in the video game craze. You’ve weaned them from endless cartoons and cop shows but they’ve traded it in for a console and a joystick. It’s not that video games are bad. They have their redeeming qualities just like television. The name of the game here is moderation.

Even if you don’t know an elf lord from a troll prince you can make sure that that is not the only thing your kid knows about. Video games are a way for your kids to relax but not the only way. Engage your children in other activities (preferably outside) to break the couch potato cycle.

Endless video game playing has added to the sedentary lifestyle of today’s youth. Instead of playing outdoors with balls and bats they are inside sitting comfortably on the couch or one of those gaming chairs and signing on for virtual worlds unknown to most parents. It scares you because you no longer understand the world of video gaming.

Obesity is now an epidemic with our kids. They lack proper daily exercise to keep their weight under control. By exercise, we mean movement. Kids exercise more than you think. Walking to and from school or dancing to their iPod tunes keeps the body active enough to burn excess calories. They don’t even have to play a sport to get what they need to stay healthy.

Video games are mostly played sitting down. That’s how they were designed. Think of it like an office job. Computers were designed to be used sitting down. It’s a necessary evil but it doesn’t have to ruin your health.

One solution is a set schedule for their afternoon. When your kids get home from school, let them know the order of the day. First, they can tackle chores. After energizing them again, lead them to the homework table.

What do you know; it’s now time for dinner. After dinner, they have a choice of television or video games. All of the other important things are done so they can relax and unwind with either but not both. This limits their time to one or at most two hours of gaming a day as their last activity before bed. After all of the other stuff you’ve given them to do, they might just fall into bed early.

Break the couch potato cycle with a limit on video games and other creative ideas.

Atkins Diet

The well known high protein diet developed by Dr Robert C Atkins. No high carbohydrate foods.

Blood Type Diet

A diet developed by Peter D'Adamo where you select from foods that are said to be right for your blood type (A, B, AB or O).

Cabbage Soup Diet

Scarsdale Diet

This is a high protein, low carbohydrate, low calorie diet with grapefruit. You follow the diet plan for 2 weeks at a time. Claims you can lose up to 20 pounds in 14 days.

South Beach Diet

Developed by a cardiologist, the South Beach diet identifies good carbohydrates and fats and avoids bad carbohydrates and fats. In three phases, this is a high protein diet for fast weight loss in the first 2 weeks, adding more foods back into the diet in subsequent weeks and finishing with a maintenance plan. Encourages frequent small meals.

Subway Diet

The most faddy diet on our list, this one consists of eating all meals from the healthy food options at the Subway chain of restaurants. Invented by college student Jared Fogle who lost 245 pounds in one year on this diet.

Zone Diet

This diet is based around a plan of consuming 40% of calories from carbs, 30% from protein and 30% from fats. There is no particular calorie restriction. A long term diet that claims to balance the hormones including insulin so that the body can make best use of food, and that a 30% limit on fats prevents the body storing fat.

The Balanced Way To Diet

3 Tips to Bust Through Your Weight Loss Plateau

Are you frustrated with your weight loss results even though you have lost some fat around your middle and your spare truck tire is now the size of a bicycle tire? Well read on to get that fat burning furnace started again.

Basically what happens when you plateau on a weight loss program is your body is adapting to the workouts and caloric intake. Your body is smart and is catching on to your fat loss efforts. It's fat loss reserves are getting lower so it's panicking and holding on to what's left.

It's like when people who swim continue to be able to swim more laps and thinking that it is a good thing as they are doing more and improving their conditioning.

But what is happening is your body is burning less calories each time because you are IMPROVING your conditioning.

The harder your muscles and heart work to move your body the more calories you will burn even at rest.

Just visualize spinning a top as your metabolism. You want to spin it really hard so it will continue to spin on its own when you let go of it.

So you will just need to kick things up a notch and cause a metabolic disturbance in your body so you keep losing fat.

Variety is the spice of life inside and outside the gym. Constantly challenging yourself improves your physically fitness as well as mental fitness.

We all know if you are bored with your current routine, you won't do it. So don't let your workouts get stale!

1. Change up your weight training workouts to exercises that you haven't been doing. Use different rep ranges, different angles and shorter rest periods.

2. Stop slaving away on the treadmill for your cardio and use bodyweight exercises and barbell or dumbbell complexes where you superset without rest from one exercise to another.

This will burn a ton of calories in a short amount of time because you are using all your bodies major muscles while increasing your heart rate.

3. As for your diet plan, don't drop your calories too low, too fast.

This is a surefire way to lose lean muscle mass and slow down your metabolism.

Take a closer look at your diet and track your caloric intake for a few days to make sure you are not taking in some hidden calories that you may not be aware of.

You can't trick basic biology. If you are burning up more calories than you are taking in, you WILL lose weight.

One simple tip for fast fat loss is to only eat starchy carbs like oatmeal, breads and brown rice within the 2 hour period AFTER your workout.

For the rest of your daily meals and snacks, eat only fruits and veggies for energy and fiber rich carbohydrates.

With a few little diet tweaks and adding some variety and intensity into your weight loss plan you should start losing that frustrating fat again.
