3 Keys to Losing Fat and Maintaining Muscle at The Same Time

There are three main keys to losing fat and gaining muscle. If you’re missing any of these you will most likely fail in your attempts to build a lean muscular body. So what are they?

1) Eat Less Calories than you burn off

2) Resistance Training

3) Eating enough protein to maintain muscle mass

That’s as short and sweet as I can put it.

Any diet can work as long as it gets you to eat less calories than you burn off. The key is to find a diet that suits your personality and your lifestyle. If you’re like me you don’t have time to spend on diet rules and focusing on good foods and bad foods, and what to eat and what not to eat, and meal timing and all of that.

The diet that will work for you will most likely be the one with the least amount of rules, or in fact no rules at all but rather just provide a guideline or two. For me that diet is Eat Stop Eat. It is the simplest nutrition program I have ever come across. There is only one guideline, and that is to take a 24 hour break from eating once or twice per week. That’s it, simple and effective.

This type of eating program might work for you, or it might not. You just have to try it first. As long as you can find a diet you can stick with for the long term you’ll be able to lose weight, the next key it making sure all of that weight comes from fat. This is where resistance training comes in.

You have to do some form of resistance training in order to maintain and build muscle mass while you’re losing fat. If you are following an effective diet without doing resistance training you could end up losing muscle mass along the way. If this happens you could lose body weight without actually improving the look or shape of your body.

Your actual bodyweight doesn’t matter as much as your percentage of fat. If you can lose 5 pounds of fat, but gain 3 pounds of muscle you will only lose 2 pounds of bodyweight on the scale, but you’ll look 8 pounds different. Even though 2 pounds doesn’t sound like much, the difference on your body fat percentage is the key.

This is why weight training is so important while dieting. Weight training is the best way to make sure you don’t lose muscle while you diet, this helps with overall health as well as improving the overall look and shape of your body. After all when you diet the goal is to show off the lean muscle that is under the fat.

The third key to building muscle while losing fat is protein. You have to eat just enough protein to make sure your muscles can grow. This is a controversial topic that many nutrition ‘experts’ still don’t agree on. But the bottom line is protein is your friend when it comes to building muscle and especially when you’re dieting.

Mix these three key ingredients together and you’ll have a potent fat loss and muscle building program that can transform your body in no time.

Carbohydrates and Fat Loss - What’s the Deal?

Carbohydrates play an important role in any fat loss diet. You need them to help you recover from your workouts but you need to limit them so that they don’t inhibit your fat loss. So what is the right balance of carbohydrates in your diet? When you eat carbs and what kind of carbs you eat depends on your body type and the time of day. Let’s look at this idea a little more closely.

The degree in which your body does not ‘handle’ carbohydrates well is known in sciency terms as insulin resistance. While there are many factors that impact insulin resistance; the most important is your body fat. Lots of Visceral body fat (the kind that sits inside your gut surrounding your organs) leads to increased insulin resistance. The greater your insulin resistance the worse your body is at processing carbohydrates.

The best way to deal with insulin resistance from a dietary standpoint is to use lower impact carbohydrates. The ‘impact’ of a carbohydrate is the level in which it effects your blood sugar levels. This can be measured in terms of ‘glycemic load’ (higher glycemic load leads to greater effect on your blood sugar levels). One of the world’s top glycemic load researchers, David Ludwig, discovered in one of his research studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that people with insulin resistance lost more weight when they were on a low glycemic load diet vs. a low fat diet.

Low glycemic load diets are typically lower total carbohydrates and higher in protein and fat than a typical low fat diet. This is the perfect kind of diet for weight loss. You can easily eat this way by switching out rice, pasta, potatoes, breads, etc for spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, green beans, chick peas, etc. These are the kinds of carbs that you want to focus on eating throughout the day as they are low in total carbohydrates and sugars but higher in fiber.

While low ‘impact’ carbs are important for controlling insulin levels and increasing your rate of fat loss, fast acting carbs are also an important part of a fat loss diet. A 2006 study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology showed that when people drank a sugary shake during their workout over the course of 12 weeks, they lost just as much weight as the ones that did not drink anything. Carbohydrates during your workout will allow you to train harder, burning more calories, and thus losing more fat. Fast acting carbs during your workout will also allow you to recover from your workouts faster, allowing you to continue training hard and losing weight fast.

The final important point that needs to be made is that when low carbohydrate diets are compared to low fat diets, the people on low carb diets consistently lose more weight after 6 months on the diet and they do not need to focus on cutting calories - they just eat however much they want. People on low fat diets need to focus on restricting calories and they don’t lose as much weight. Which diet would you rather be on?

If you are truly serious about losing weight as fast as possible then you need to adopt a low carb approach during the day but allow for a fast acting carb workout shake when you train.

How to Break a Fat Loss Plateau

What is stopping your from reaching your fat loss goals? Maybe you are on track. If so then you can skip this article and go read something else…however…if your body isn’t where you want it to be then keep reading.

It is not uncommon that I talk with someone about their weight loss and they are completely baffled about why they can’t lose more weight. They are training hard and they are using a solid high protein, reduced carbohydrate, low calorie diet but they just aren’t losing weight fast enough.

The first question I always ask is - “Do you track your compliance?”

They respond “Huh?”

The truth is that you may have an amazing training and diet program but if you aren’t following the plan then you might as well have a bad training and diet program. You may be thinking. “Yeah, compliance…I’ve heard that before, I actually DO track what I eat.” That’s well and good but let’s takes this compliance thing one step further and look at the little things.

Let’s be honest. You can eat an extra piece of toast and not mark it down. You can make that teaspoon of peanut butter more like a tablespoon and not tell anyone but in the end the tape measure never lies. It is these small food indiscretions that most people don’t may attention to but in the end they can be the deciding factor in your fat loss. You can overlook them and lie to yourself now but you’ll be disappointed later on when the time comes to measure your progress - the tape measure never lies. It is better to be honest about your compliance so you can make strides to fix the holes in your plan, then lie to yourself, not lose the weight, and be stuck saying “I don’t know why I’m not losing any weight.”

Are you making this mistake? Be honest with yourself. Let’s look at some things that you should be doing on a daily/weekly basis. If you aren’t physically tracking your compliance then you need to start there. How many of your planned meals are you eating? How many are you missing? That is step one. The next step is to ensure that you are accurately tracking your compliance. This is an area we are all tempted to cheat in.

One of the not so obvious reasons why I recommend that people “chunk” their food prep and do in 1-2 times a week is because many people snack while cooking (I’m very guilty in this area). A slice of chicken here, a couple carrots there, you know what I’m talking about. These things add up. If you can’t cut out your nibbling when cooking it is very important that you “chunk” your prep. The difference could be as much as 500 calories a week saved (maybe more!).

Your mission is to get your compliance in check. In order to guarantee your success this is the only change that you should make over the next 2 weeks. Don’t change your diet, don’t change your training - just focus on accurately tracking your compliance and under the radar snacking. If after 2 weeks you notice that your measurement are going down or the the scale shows that you’ve lost more weight then we know that was the problem.

Why You Should “Just Say No” To Diets To Burn Fat (Part 2)

In part one of this article, I talked about how avoiding diets is one of the best things you can do for your long term health and fitness success, especially if you want to burn fat.  In this second part, I’ll show you how you can start to transition from your current lifestyle to one that creates a lean, strong body and lasting health.

From a nutritional standpoint, you need a healthy balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in your diet to keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders, constantly burning fat.  Fad diets have a coolness factor to them that sometimes makes them irresistible at first.  But in the long run I’ve found it best to go back to the basics of what your body craves. Let’s talk about that…

Complex Carbs (whole grains, breads, cereals, etc.) are vital to maintaining your energy throughout the day and do a host of other things within your body including keeping you feeling full.  I’ll also lump fruits in with complex carbs, because of their high fiber content and slow absorption into the blood stream, keeping our insulin level in check, which is important for less fat storage and a higher chance of burning stored fat.

Simple Carbs, or sugars (candy, soda pop, white processed baked goods, etc) are to be avoided and kept to a minimum for the most part.  They provide little nutritional value to you and are what I often refer to as empty calories. They just add calories to your body with little or no nutritional value that are going to end up in your fat stores if you’re not careful with how much you ingest. 

Forget about maximum fat burning here.  Of course, many people are aware of the blood sugar and insulin connection with eating too many simple carbs.  Our insulin regulates are blood sugar level and takes any excess sugars and stores them as fat.  We then are stuck getting tired and hungry, making repeating this cycle far too easy.  The best way to avoid this, I’ve found, is eating a sensible amounts of complex carbohydrates instead.

Proteins (lean meats, fish, poultry, soy, beans and legumes, etc.) are important to maintain the cellular structures in your body and provide the building blocks for the lean muscle you’re after, which is vital if you want to burn fat fast.  But with anything else, don’t go overboard with protein.  Some fitness experts claim that you’ll need a minimum 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight each day.

There is no real proof that this is the case, and ingesting more protein than your body needs ends up going to your fat stores…plus it doesn’t do your kidneys or liver any good either.  I’ve found that keeping protein to around 0.5 grams per pound of bodyweight each day more than sufficient in feeding the lean muscle growth that my Fat Burning Furnace students stimulate with their properly performed resistance exercise.

Another important aspect of protein involves whether or not you’re getting your protein from animal or plant based sources.  While the traditional American diet recommends most animal based proteins, recent data suggests that too heavy a reliance on animal proteins increases risks for disease.

On top of that, animal proteins contain almost no fiber, which doesn’t go very far in keeping you feeling full, and negatively effects your ability to burn fat.  When choosing your protein sources, make sure you eat a good portion of your protein from plant sources (soy, beans, legumes, etc.).  You don’t have to be a vegetarian, but I recommend keeping your animal proteins on the low side.

Fats (found in many proteins, nuts, oils, etc.) are essential to maintain certain bodily processes like hair, nail, and skin regeneration.  There is a lot of confusion with fats out there, some recommending extremely low fat diets and others even recommending a very high fat diet.  If you are focusing on lean protein choices in your meals, and including small amounts of healthy oils, nuts, and seeds in your diet, your fat intake will be in order.

So how much of each of these macro nutrients should you be eating to maximize fat burning and get that lean fit body you’re after?  It’s easy to get caught up in the percentages and counting calories, but the easiest way I’ve found is to count portions instead of calories.

An easy way to ensure that this happens is to make sure you eat both a portion or two of complex carbs and a portion of protein at each meal.  Add as many  green veggies as you can eat, as they’re super low in calories and provide more fiber, enzymes that aid in digestion, and vitamins and minerals that will be more than adequate for most people.  Remember, focus on nutrient rich foods and you’ll find that burning fat and getting healthy will seem like a natural.

How many times per day should we be eating to burn the most fat?  I can tell you that three meals a day is not going to cut it when trying to burn fat fast and get lean, at least not in my experience.  In fact, if you wanted to get as fat as possible, you should eat all of your daily calories in one meal.

Eating smaller more frequent meals throughout the day is the fastest way to fat loss.  It fires up your metabolism, as every time you eat something, the metabolism kicks it up a notch.  Try and eat 5-6 smaller meals per day, spaced about 3 hours apart.

Now, I know many people don’t want to be taken out of their breakfast, lunch, and dinner routine…so you can still eat at those traditional meal times, but try cutting back a bit on how much food you eat at those meals and add those calories into 2 or 3 snack meals in between.  A snack meal could be a protein/energy bar or maybe even a piece of fruit and a slice of whole grain bread.

So you see, eating for a lean, strong, and healthy body isn’t so difficult…and it doesn’t require you to eliminate essential foods like complex carbohydrates from your diet.  In fact, doing so will put you into the cycle of confusion of fad diets that is all too prevalent in fitness today.

And that’s a cycle that’s tough to break out of.  Focus on foods your body craves naturally instead, and the rest of the details will be easy to implement into your lifestyle.  Before long you'll start to burn fat faster than you might have thought possible.

Why You Should “Just Say No” To Diets To Burn Fat (Part 1)

Fad diets, they all have one thing in common.  They’re diets.  They are like a pair of bell bottom pants.  They are in for a couple of years and they’re gone.  Then they find they’re way back just when the fitness professionals know we are ready to eat 'em up again…no pun intended.  When you're trying to burn fat, you really should avoid these things like the plague.

Now, realistically many of these diets will provide some initial fat loss for many people.  So you get some weight loss initially, but you could also lose some muscle on these programs too, and you know that losing muscle can spell disaster to your fat burning efforts.  But the bigger problem with these diets is that most who follow outlandish diets gain back the fat they lost, and then some!

On top of that, they often recommend focusing too much on one type of food, which can lead to unhealthy eating habits.  I’ve found they are too strict to be realistically followed, especially for a long period of time, and they’re no fun.  And anything you can't follow as a lifestyle will not burn fat in the long run.

You see, the very concept of a diet is doomed to fail.  Why?  Diets are based in a temporary mindset.  The fact that someone goes on a diet means they will have to come off of the diet.  This is temporary…why force yourself to lose 10 pounds when you’re just going to gain it back and then some when you go off of the diet?  That may sound simple, but most people just don’t get it…they look to diets as the answer to their weight and health problems.  But they’re not the answer, and they actually create more problems for you.  People who are regular dieters don't burn fat over the long haul.

If you seek life long fat burning, health and fitness in a lean body, you should take some advice from my mom, and probably your mom too.  When I think about it, probably the best base of nutritional knowledge I received was from my mom.  For the most part, my mom was right.  She didn't know anything about fat burning, but she made sure I got nutritious foods growing up.

She especially made a point to make sure I ate my vegetables, especially the green ones.  She limited sugary stuff and other junk, but didn’t totally eliminate it, making it a special treat for me on occasion.  She tried to provide a balanced offering of the different food groups throughout the day.

Thanks, Mom!  Mom’s diet was actually quite sound, and I’ve found that heeding some of this advice in the pursuit of maximum fat burning and a lean healthy body for the rest of your life is a smart way to go.  

You see, your body naturally craves foods rich in nutrients (antioxidants, phyto nutrients, fiber, vitamins, minerals, etc.)  When you eat most of your meals from foods rich in important nutrients, your body will body will be satisfied and overeating won’t be much of a problem.

You then begin to burn fat as a natural result of giving your body what it thrives on.  On top of that, you’re lowering your risk for disease by promoting a natural alkaline environment in your body with these types of foods.

If you do the opposite and eat most of your meals from foods lacking in nutrients, you’ll keep eating and eating and eating to satisfy your nutrient needs.  This leads to too many calories and a person who will just keep getting fatter and more prone to develop increased risk for disease with an acidic environment in the body.  When this happens, you can just kiss fat burning goodbye.

So nutrition for fat loss, fitness, and health really all do go hand in hand.  My Fat Burning Furnace students have changed their lives permanently, by simply altering what they put in their bodies…and you can do it to.

New Research: Fat Is Contagious?

It's like a dream come true.

"Gaining bodyfat is the result  of a virus."

Wouldn't that be great news?

Well...

Let me tell you about the AD-36 adenovirus. Adenoviruses are the same nasty bugs that cause the common cold. We all have these viruses in various forms in our body all the time.

That last bit is a critical distinction.

Remember that.

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana has been doing some really ground-breaking research on AD-36. AD-36 affects stem cells... more specifically fat cells, both pre-formed and post-formed.

This means AD-36 can make MORE fat cells if contracted as an infant and make your fat cells larger if contracted as an adult.

Or so the theory goes.

To quote the study:

"Earlier researchers have concluded that Ad-36 may be contributors to obesity by super-charging fat cells to grow and store more fat. Until now, though, those researchers thought the viruses targeted pre-fat cells (called pre-adipocytes), causing them to convert in higher numbers to fat cells and causing those fat cells to be larger. Those studies were in mice. Pasaricas work determines the virus targets stem cells in humans."

The result?

"In one test, a third of obese people had the rare and highly contagious virus compared to just 11 percent of thinner people. Weight gain can last three months until the body has built up resistance to the bug."

Wow. Sounds like we have a winner here. A virus that you can catch that literally makes you gain bodyfat!  All we need is...

a vaccine!

Right?

Wrong.

First of all, notice that 11% of LEAN people have AD-36. And at any given time, just like a cold or a flu virus, you could contract AD-36. If your body has 'never' been exposed to it, you may require about 3 months to build up antibodies to ward it off.

Now, you can gain a lot of weight in 3 months... but come on. You cannot become obese in three months unless you are really, REALLY working at it.

Plus, like most viruses, you build up immunity to AD-36. Researchers do not know how long the immunity lasts, but some theorize it could last years... some even decades.

And let's not forget those 11% who are lean and have the virus.

Why did they not all of a sudden get "sick" with bodyfat?

Because they are not EATING or LIVING in a way that allows them to gain bodyfat no matter what nasty freakin' viruses may be floating about, that's why.

That's right folks:  It is always going to come down to the food we put in our body and the way we move.

Here's another hypothesis presented by Sherry Strong, food philosopher and nutritionist:  "This could very well be the result of nature creating a mutation to encourage us to eat more due to the fact our consumption of natural, whole and organic foods is so low."

Brilliant observation... and one that makes complete sense.

Even if a "virus" is responsible for 20% of our weight gain, what about the other 80%?

We do not need a vaccine other than good food and a common sense workout plan.

Lifetime Fat Loss

This past weekend I got to catch up with a friend (Jack) whom I hadn't seen in several months. Like most people Jack hadn't really changed in appearance since the last time we saw each other (around the 1st of the year). Jack and I talked for a while about stuff (Mario Kart for the Nintendo Wii, the increasing price of corn, how summer TV is really bad, you know the usual) then as many of my conversations seem to go Jack started asking me about nutrition and fat loss.

Basically Jack was pretty frustrated. He said that he had been dieting for "as long as I can remember" but somehow he still had 15lbs to lose.  Some further interrogation (okay I wasn't interrogating my friend) Jack 'fessed up that while he was a lifetime dieter his compliance to his fat loss diet was pretty bad.

This resulted in something that I find with a lot of people. Because Jack was supposed to be "dieting" he would never feel like he could enjoy non-clean foods or foods in normal/larger quantities, so he'd feel guilty when he ate them, get discouraged, fall off the wagon, wait until Monday, and start dieting again.

This cycle would repeat week after week, month after month. The end result was Jack wasn't losing the weight he wanted and he was burnt out and discouraged because he felt like he had been dieting forever and not getting anywhere.

The best cure for the lifetime dieter that I have found is an all out blitz. Jack has been getting lost in 12 week fat loss programs, so shorter (and more extreme) program is better for him. It's not your fault...

I want to you to understand something VERY important:

Most people blame themselves because they can't lose the
stubborn fat they want to...or get the s.exy body they
want...or get the teenager-like energy they want...the list
goes on...BUT-

-YOU CAN'T WIN THIS WAY...beating yourself up and
disapproving of yourself will only create more self doubt in
your mind and have you believing that it's your fault you're
not as lean or fit as you'd like to be.  That is complete
B.S.!

(By the way, if you sit on your butt and do nothing, then
YES, it is your fault, but I'm talking about most people who
are out there at least trying to get it done)

Here's the TRUTH:

There is a lot of crap out there in the fat loss and fitness
industry (magic pills, gizmos, etc.) that just doesn't work
and is only aimed at swiping your hard earned money...

...And there is some good stuff out there too...

Is Your Fat Burning Exercise Routine Keeping You Fat And Unhealthy?

The majority of exercisers today still rely on long duration moderate paced aerobic exercise as their primary routine to burn fat fast.  But recent studies have shown that this is a big, I mean big mistake.  In fact, you could say that the whole aerobics explosion of a few decades past was one of the biggest mistakes in the health and fitness industry.  Why?

There are several reasons, but I’ll focus on the two main issues here.  When you exercise at a moderate pace for extended periods of time (as in the typically recommended percent of your target heart rate), your body is burning fat during the exercise.  While this may sound good, it’s actually bad news.

This sends a signal to your body to keep a certain amount of stored fat available for your next workout.  You’re essentially telling it that it needs fat available to burn, ‘because you’ll be doing this exercise again.  So while we may be burning some calories during this exercise, after the exercise is over, our body begins storing up some fat for the next workout.  Obviously not what we’re looking for in terms of maximum ability to burn fat fast.

The other big concern with moderately paced aerobic exercise performed several times per week is that it trains your body (heart, lungs, muscles, etc.) to become efficient.  Again, this may sound good, but what is actually happening is bad for long term health.  You are working only within your existing aerobic limits, without improving your aerobic capacity.

This is important because your aerobic capacity is what determines how your body responds in times of physical, emotional, and mental stress.  If you reduce your capacity for work, as you do in this type of exercise, you’re reducing your long term health, no to mention a poor chance of burning fat.

The good news is, you can reverse these effects by instead focusing your workouts on high intensity resistance training, with workouts that last 15-20 minutes on average, and can only be performed 2-3 times per week.

These workouts will burn carbohydrates instead of fat during the workout, and will cause your body to use its fat stores to replenish the burned carbs over the next 24 hours, after the workout is done!  This type of work will also increase your reserve capacity and thus your ability to handle all types of stress, leading to lasting health and fitness...and 24/7 fat burning.  Nice!

But the exercise must be performed correctly to be effective, and that means using sufficient intensity, and keeping your rest periods between exercises and sets down to 60 seconds or less. 

The students of my Fat Burning Furnace method know this, and are reaping the benefits.  When you think about how little time you have to spend compared to the typically recommended methods to get these fat burning and health creating results, it’s almost magical.

The Secret To A Better Lovelife

Today we need to chat about your hormones.

Yeah, I chat a lot about hormones. That's because I have been to Hormone Hell and back. Twice.

I've lived to tell the tale.

It's scary... and it's one of those hidden illnesses that you might not even know you have.

I had it at 27. I did not affect my lovelife, but that was probably due to my youth. If I did not treat it then, I would have no lovelife or drive at ALL right now.

I treated it with drugs. That is all we had back then.

Today I use a combination of therapies, many of which are natural....

Here's an example:

Today I had to go to the funeral of a dear friend. She passed away after struggling with a lifetime of various illnesses, many of which were made worse by lifestyle choices. Some she had no control over.

We all loved her dearly.

We drove until 1:00AM this morning. I got up early for the funeral but not early enough to eat breakfast.

I had a large lunch afterwards and then we headed back -- another 3 hour boring drive in traffic.

Even with all of this emotional stress, my body only needed a 2-hour nap to pop right back into high gear. I could literally go and workout now at almost 11:00pm if I had to.

I'm glad I don't because I have a night of packing ahead of me for a business trip!

Still, the point is simple:

Hormone Health = Greater Energy

Most people do not exercise because... get this....

They do not FEEL like it.

I don't mean "feel like it" as in they would rather do something else, although that is the case sometimes.

I mean "feel like it" in the sense that they have NO energy to do it.

They are tired, run-down after a 9 to 5 day, and feel zonked.

Training With Weights vs "Weight Training"

Just a word of warning:

I will be using the term "bodybuilder" or "bodybuilding" to refer to anyone who wants to build lean muscle and burn bodyfat in this article.

That means you.

Yep... you are a "bodybuilder." That does not mean you want to look like a monster on stage and pose in front of thousands of people wearing nothing but your undies.

That means you want more lean muscle and less bodyfat -- that's it.

With that in mind, here's something you have to know:

Bodybuilders do not "lift weights" -- we "train" with weights.

We use weights as a tool like a sculptor uses a hammer and chisel.

The object of the game is not to lift some heavy weight from Point A to Point B and back. That's weight lifting. "Bodybuilding" is about making the muscle you want to change do all the

work.

Here's two ways to do it:

1. Lower the weight and focus:  Most people are just concerned with the lift itself. "Get this weight off of me!" seems to be the unconscious mantra. This will not get the job done. In fact you may end up looking bulky rather than sleek... or just not change at all. Instead, lower the weight slightly, slow the pace down (especially on the descent of the movement) and picture the muscle in your mind doing ALL of the work. Literally put your mind in the muscle. You will be amazed at how different the same exercise feels with this degree of concentration,.

2. Contract, hold, release:  At the top of any movement, contract the muscle hard. Hold that contraction for a second or two, then release it and lower the weight slowly. This will not only cause faster muscle growth (that is a good thing) but also demand that you use less weight to get the job done. This means your joints -- shoulders, knees, elbows -- will last a lifetime. At 45 my joints are in perfect health. Protect yours at all costs.

Just remember:  You are not just lifting weights when you train for muscle shape and "tone" -- you are a sculptor. Treat your tools and your body with that degree of care.

Lose Fat in the Morning

One of the best ways to ensure you burn maximum fat is to get it done first thing in the morning. A common fat loss tip people often give out is just this - exercise in the morning to burn more fat. Does exercising in the morning burn more calories? Unfortunately there is no scientific evidence to prove that exercising in the morning burns more calories but it may increase your fat loss.

How? Because it guarantees that you'll get your workout done! If you are having trouble losing weight, sticking to your diet, and getting in all your exercise sessions then working out first thing in the morning could be just the thing for you.

In a recent episode of Naked Nutrition Radio and the guest was behavior change expert Kara Mohr. Kara and her husband Chris Mohr hold exercise bootcamp for women in Louisville, KY at 5:30 in the morning. Why? They call it the "No Excuse Hour". You don't have any excuses not to be there and not to do it. My friend and Men's Health Expert Bill Hartman exercises at 4:00am to ensure that he gets his workout in - No Excuses. Bill runs two PT clinics, a gym, and is a family man. He has every reason to have excuses but he makes the time.

Success coach Brian Tracy always says that if you to be successful just find successful people and do what they are doing. If you are having trouble getting your workout sessions in because you day is too busy. Follow the example of these successful people and embrace the No Excuse Hour. You will feel invigorated, your metabolism will be blasting at its highest level, and you'll burn more fat.

The second important piece to the puzzle is diet. You need rock solid fat loss nutrition first thing in the morning to fuel your day. One important factor for many people (especially if they are exercising in the morning as well) is time. That is why I recommend you use a nutrition packed shake to get fueled and get going with your day. Here is a sample of the kind of shake that you should be making to burn maximum fat.

Add to a blender: walnuts, a greens supplement (such as Emerald Balance or Superfood), protein powder, and frozen blueberries. Body Fat - Stressing You Out and Making You Stupid

We can all pretty much agree that extra body fat stinks...right? It hides your abs from the world, makes your favorite clothes not fit, and increases your risk of heart disease and cancer. But did you know that you know that it can impair how your body responds to stress?

Here's how. Increased levels of visceral fat (i.e. not the stomach fat you can pinch, the fat sitting around your organs) lead to increased level of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that have been shown to decrease mental performance.

I just came across a pretty cool study that looked at body fat and its effect on one's ability to handle emotional stress...the results were not good if you have extra belly fat as the researchers found that the people whom had the lowest body fat percentage had the greatest ability to rebound from bouts of emotional stress (in the study they used sky diving).

So the connection is more belly fat leads to more cortisol which leads to decreased brain power and ability to cope with emotional stressors.

I'm sure that some of you may question whether body fat is the cause or not but I don't think that whether or not body fat is the cause really matters.

The people with lower body fat percentages are probably more active and athletic thus their bodies were accustomed to dealing with stressors or they may have better nutrition which could also help them cope better with stress. Better nutrition and more exercise are important factors that allow them to have lower body fat levels and deal with stress better.

The key point is that you need to get rid of the extra body fat hanging off your body as it is literally stressing you out. Many people's lives today are high pressure and always on the move. We need to be able to function at the top of our game at all times. When things are stressful you want to know that you are going to be able to function at your best.

To be at your best under stress (and not under stress for that matter) you can't have extra body fat slowing your down and metabolically contaminating your success by decreasing your body's ability to cope and respond to daily stressors.

Lose the weight and you will feel and perform better. Aside from the scientific evidence that shows extra body fat decreases our ability to properly respond to stress, think about it for a minute. When you are lean, don't you feel better about yourself? Don't you have more energy? I'm guessing that you answer yes to both of those questions right?

How to you lose weight? The fastest way to do this is metabolic resistance training and a solid fat loss diet rich in protein, fibrous vegetables, fish oil, and a variety of different fats (olive oil, butter, walnuts, flax, coconut oil, etc). Combine these two, lose the weight, and you'll brush stress off your shoulders - no problem.

For now, here's the spices that work the best to help you burn bodyfat:

Lose Fat Without Changing Your Diet

Strategies on how to lose fat normally centers on specific dietary approaches. However, there are many factors aside from controlling how many grams of fat you consume each day that can help accelerate your fat loss. In this article we will look at two different nutrition research studies that reveal key strategies for effective and permanent weight loss.

Weight Gaining Behavior - A 2004 study published by Dr. David Levitsky examined the eating behaviors of college freshman at Cornell University. He found that the students whom gained the most weight had 3 common characteristics:

1. "All You Can Eat" Dining
2. Snacking On High Fat Junk Foods
3. Increased Frequency of Snacking on Junk Foods

The problem here is that humans don't snack well. We don't regulate our caloric intake over time such that if we eat an extra 300 calories as a snack mid morning then we won't eat 300 calories less at lunch.

You need to be careful when it comes to snacking. Most snacks are carbohydrate and/or sugar based. AVOID these snacks at all costs. They will balloon your calories and carbohydrate intake, pulling you right out of the fat burning zone. Instead focus on eating protein and fiber rich snacks. This one behavior change will make a huge different in your journey to lose more weight.

In regards to "All You Can Eat" Dining, this is just a bad idea. Control your environment. We are very sensitive to visual cues such as plate size, amount of food, glass size/style, etc.  "All You Can Eat" Dining is setting yourself up for dieting failure - avoid it at all costs so you can control your calorie intake with ease.

Stress, Exercise, and Support - Another famous study, the Lifestyle Heart Trial, reveals to us 3 crucial behavior changes that we must make for permanent and fast weight loss. Between 1977-1980, a group of people were put on the Ornish Diet as part of the Lifestyle Heart Trial. The Ornish Diet is a vegetarian diet that is very low in fat (less than 10% of calories from fat). Because of the severe fat restriction many find this diet hard to adhere to for the long term. However, during the Lifestyle Heart Trial the participants experienced phenomenal results such as regression of heart attack causing plaques in their arteries. Ever since this original study, similar results using the Ornish Diet have never been replicated.

Why?

Because the people in the study were implementing more than just a diet; they also did regular exercise (3 hours per week), meditation and relaxation (1 hour per day), and participated in 2 group support sessions each week. The addition of the other factors made the diet so much more effective.

Most people are probably already adding exercise to their weight loss plan but many miss regular stress management and developing a strong support system. These are make or break pieces to your fat loss puzzle. Adding exercise, stress management techniques, and finding a support system will greatly enhance your weight loss results.

If you are having trouble losing weight or if you have hit a weight loss plateau examine your current fat loss efforts. Do you actively manage the stress in your life? Do you have a support team? What kinds of foods are you snacking on? Do you control the portions you eat by avoiding "All You Can Eat" events?

Honestly answer these questions. Find the holes in your plan. Change them and get your fat loss back on track.

3 Ways Carbohydrates Can Make You Fat

Can carbohydrates make you fat? Are carbohydrates essential for fueling the body and having it run efficiently? Do I need to watch my intake of carbohydrates to prevent fat storage? The answer to all 3 questions is Yes!

So what does all this mean? Am I not to eat carbs or am I supposed to eat carbs? How many carbs should I eat? What types? The entire carbohydrate craze has gone from one extreme to the other and back again. It's no wonder you may be confused, frustrated, mad or all of the above.

There is a ton of information flying around and much of it is garbage. Here are the facts about carbs and how you should use this information.

1. Your body can store all carbs as fat when the muscles and the liver are already full of glycogen. So if you continuously eat a high carbohydrate diet this can lead to increased fat storage. Also, you can store more of your carb calories as fat when you eat too many processed and refined carbs. The key is to consume moderate carbs and choose carbs that have at least 2gms of fiber per serving. This will help control insulin spikes, which leads us to number 2.

2. Eating too many carbs at one sitting without enough other nutrients to counteract its effect will cause insulin spikes, which then triggers your body's fat storing mechanisms. This is why I suggest you eat whole grain carbs, vegetables and fruits with skin when possible because they will provide good sources of fiber to help control these insulin spikes. Also, make sure you balance your carb intake with lean protein to further counteract the effects of carbs in the body in regards to elevating your insulin levels.

3. Through a process known as de novo lipogenesis your body can directly increase fat storage by converting carbohydrates to fat. So I will reiterate why you need to eat carbs. Eat whole grain, high fiber carbs as well as lean protein to control blood sugar rise, which then controls insulin spikes and helps prevent you from storing carb calories as fat.

So now that you have the facts about carbs should you be eating them or not. To summarize you do need carbs. Your body does need carbs to function properly and maintain optimal efficiency. The body doesn't need as many carbs as we feed it though. It also doesn't need the refined flours and process carbs we have become accustomed to eating. As we have gotten lazier and our lives have become busier we tend to lean towards convenient foods and they are usually not the healthiest of foods.

We have consumed too much of those foods and then blamed it all on carbs as to why we are fat. Carbs are not the main culprit. They do play a part as I describe above as to how they can make you fat. I also mention how to eat carbs so that they don't make you fat.
